When we look at the world we see that it is the rich and powerful who are "running the show". They are building the sky-scrapers, shaping the economy, starting up the "start-ups", developing technology etc. etc. That is a WONDER!!! The entire purpose of life is the develop and elevate the spirit yet empirically we see that life on this planet is all about the material. That is why Trump is President and not Rav Yaakov Meir Schechter or Rav Tzvi Meir Zilberberg. The material "Trumps" the spiritual, the chitzoniyus seems to drown out the pnimiyus. OYYYY VEYYYYY!!!
The explanation is that everything the world is busy with is in order to create an infrastructure to allow the spirit to soar. We need banks and bankers, real estate and real estate tycoons, airplanes and huuuuge airports, flight attendants who attend only to our physical needs but not our spiritual ones ["what would you like for breakfast - a sefer tehillim or a chumash to do shnayim mikra?"], massive shopping centers to buy everything you need and even some things you don't need and all of the materialism around us.
It is like a car. You don't really care about the car per se, it is just a huge piece of metal, glass, plastic etc. But it is AWFULLY HELPFUL to get you to shul and back [even though I suggest walking if you can - much healthier], to bringing your kids to their yeshivos, to go to the supermarket and buy Shabbos food etc. etc. It is not an end but a critical means. All of the materialism that inundates us is designed to enable us to devote ourselves to spiritual pursuits.
One example: Look at how many shiurim there are that can only be accessed with a computer or the like!!
Let's never forget what is the means and what is the end!!:-)
