חלק הד' - הקובע עצמו תמיד לשיחה בטלה ודברים בטלים כדרך יושבי קרנות, ושתים רעות יש בדבר. האחת - כי כל המרבה דברים מביא חטא. והשנית - כי הוא בטל מדברי התורה. ויש בדבר הזה דרכי מות. כי איך לא זכר ולא שם על לבו כי בעתים ההם אשר הוא משחיתם יוכל להשיג הנעימות לקנות חיי עולם אם יקבע העתים המזומנים לתורה. אשר הוא פנוי מהם ממלאכת שמים מעליו. על כן יענש לשאת עול היסורים מדה כנגד מדה. שנאמר - (ישעיהו כ״ח:כ״ב) ועתה אל תתלוצצו פן יחזקו מוסריכם. ואמרו ז"ל כל המתלוצץ יסורים באים עליו שנאמר פן יחזקו מוסריכם. והחכמים היו מזהירים לתלמידיהם שלא להתלוצץ גם על דרך מקרה ועראי. ועל החלק הזה הוצרכו להזהיר כי רבים יכשלו בו על דרך מקרה:
And the fourth section: One who always makes a habit for himself to engage in idle talk, and idle matters, like those who sit in the street corners. And there are two evils in the matter: The first is because all who proliferate words bring sin. And the second is that he is idle from [speaking] words of Torah. And the ways of death [are found] in this. For he does not remember or pay attention, that the time periods that he is wasting, he could [use] to reach pleasantness, to acquire eternal life - if he were to set these available times for Torah when he is free, for the work of the Heavens which is upon him. Therefore he will be punished to carry the yoke of afflictions - measure for measure - as it is stated (Isaiah 28:22), “Now therefore do not be scoffers, lest your suffering be made strong.” And they, may their memory be blessed, said (Avodah Zarah 18b), “Anyone who scoffs, suffering will befall him, as it is stated, ‘lest your suffering be made strong.’” And the Sages would warn their students against scoffing even occasionally and by chance. And about this section they had to warn, since many have stumbled on it in an occasional way. [Rabbeinu Yonah 3/177]
A Jew doesn't waste time!! He realizes that the purpose of this world is to WORK!!!! Yes, we all need down time, time to relax, to chill etc. etc. That is PART of our Avodah. But beyond what we physically and emotionally need, we don't waste a SECOND on frivolous matters.
Yaakov is called an איש תם יושב אהלים. Yaakov sits and SHTEIGS!!!! He is involved in the never ending pursuit of wisdom and understanding of Hashem and His ways.
עשיו is called איש יודע ציד איש שדה - He hunts and as Unkelos says גבר נחשירכן which means according to רבינו תם [Tos. BK 92b] אדם נח ובטל. A person who just wants to relax and DO NOTHING. THAT is the goal of his hunting. Like millions of Americans. They work hard with two major goals in mind - the weekend and retirement, when they can finally do nothing and still have money.
They have time to watch the Olympics and other hyped-up-yet-utterly-meaningless-sports-competitions. They have time for Netflix. They have time for Facebook and twitter and instagram and all of the other social media platforms. They have time for empty discussions about nothing. They have time for card games and bingo [do people still play bingo???].
WE DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We live with our "eyes on the ball", the "ball" being our ultimate purpose which is to fix our souls and to fix the world in our own small way. We ALWAYS have more to learn, more chesed to perform, more phone calls to make to our parents, grandparents, lonely people, Tehillim to say, people to visit in the hospital etc. etc. NEVER is there a moment that can't be used for something productive with which we can acquire ETERNITY!!
A person who wastes time is called by R' Yonah a מתלוצץ - scoffer. He is scoffing at himself and at his life. As they say in Israel "הוא צוחק על עצמו"!!! TIME IS LIFE. To waste time is an elegant form of SUICIDE!!!!
Living with meaning and purpose is a PROVEN METHOD for happiness. GO FOR IT!!!! You can't lose😘😄.
