I never try to pretend to understand the "mind" of Hashem and why He does things. But one thing I have seen through the trials and tribulations of my life - They are GREAT ego crushers.
So if I have a big ego - it would have been much bigger if not for my life experiences. And if I don't have a large ego - it is because of those valuable lessons and hard knocks.
I wouldn't give them up for the world and hope to have no more in the future...
A man just comes to a place where he realizes that he is not much more than a trampled clod of dirt, a worm, a dried out twig. And he is bi-simcha about it.
