When I was a kid, I enjoyed listening to music. I didn't enjoy the hard rock with lyrics like "I WANT TO KILL YOU. I WANT TO KILL ME. I WANT US ALL TO DIE SO THERE WILL BE PEACE ON EAAAARRTTHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
I liked the genre of soft, mellow, relaxing pop music . One of my favorite songs was "I just called to say I love you". I have actually heard them playing it at Charedi weddings as soft dinner music [as an instrumental, without the words of course].
But I must say. Besides the niggun, the words are ALSO great.
Imagine. 3 times a day, we all picked up the phone and called people up. We open up the converation "I just called to say I love you". One time to our spouse. Then to mom and dad. Then to our brother or sister. The next day - 3 new people. [More awkward. You call your chavrusa. He thinks you are calling to cancel. No. "I just called to say I love you"].
Whatta tikkun for these days when we commemorate the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash which was caused by people who didn't practice the art of love....
Say it - and mean it. From the bottom of your heart.
"I Just Called To Say I Love You"
No New Year's Day to celebrate
No chocolate covered candy hearts to give away
No first of spring
No song to sing
In fact here's just another ordinary day
No April rain
No flowers bloom
No wedding Saturday within the month of June
But what it is, is something true
Made up of these three words that I must say to you
I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart
No summer's high
No warm July
No harvest moon to light one tender August night
No autumn breeze
No falling leaves
Not even time for birds to fly to southern skies
............
But what it is, though old so new
To fill your heart like no three words could ever do
I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care, I do
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart
I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care, I do
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart, of my heart,
of my heart
I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care, I do
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart, of my heart.
