"ועוד פתח ר"י בכבוד תורה ודרש, הסכת ושמע ישראל היום הזה נהיית לעם, וכי אותו היום נתנה תורה לישראל כו' אלא ללמדך שחביבה תורה על לומדיה בכל יום ויום כיום שנתנה מהר סיני". [ברכות ס"ג]
מהותה של כל אומה תגדר ע"פ דיעותיה וקניניה הרוחניים. ובאשר ברוב הדיעות הולכות ומשתנות,מתבררות ומשתלמות,עד שלובשות במשך הזמן צורה חדשה, ע"כ תחול בכל אומה זקנה וביטול כח, הפרדה וכליון. כי כאשר יאבדו סגולותיה הרוחניות, דיעותיה ומסורותיה, את ערכם לגמרי, כבר אין מעמד פנימי לאומה. וכשיתגבר עליה איזה כח מן החוץ לא תוכל לעמוד על נפשה, באשר חסר לה המעוז של החבה הפנימית לעמוד בצביונה. ובזאת התכונה עצמה עומד ברית ד' עמנו להקים אותנו לעולם לו לעם. כי אור האמת של שם ד' ית' שנקרא עלינו הוא המאור שאין לו קצבה ותכלית, האמת שאין אחריה אמת, האמת שכל מה שישתנו הדיעות והמושגים ויתבררו ביותר יוסיף עז וצדק ויגלה לעין כל בהוד והדר. ע"כ אין בעם ישראל החי בתורתו זקנה. חבתו הקדושה כרשפי אש שלהבתיה לשם ד' הנקרא עליו, לדיעותיו, לתורתו, לא יוכלו לעולם לסור מנקודת חבתם הראשונה, ועוד יוסיפו להלך הלך ואור. ע"כ בכל יום ויום יוכל לאמר לישראל היום הזה נהיית לעם, היום זרח עליך אור חדש של מושגיך המאירים באור עולם של האמת האלהית. כי האמת המוחלטת והגמורה לא תתישן לעד ולעולם, ולא תאבד כחה כימי השמים על הארץ. ע"כ חביבה תורה על לומדיה בכל יום ויום כיום שנתנה בהר סיני, כי לומדי תורה המחזיקים בעץ חיים הם המרגישים את החיים האמיתים של כלל האומה ובצילם תחי' האומה בכללה, והם כערך הלב המחיה את הגוף בחיותם הרוחנית, השמחה לעד לעולם על דבר ד' מצד אור האמת הנצחית שבה, נותנים עז וקיום לאומה בכללה לקום ולהתעודד, עד אשר תבא העת המאושרה שיקויים בנו "וכל בניך למודי ד'". "הבאים ישרש יעקב יציץ ופרח ישראל", ע"י ת"ח העושים ציצים ופרחים לתורה מרב חבה ואהבת עולם. [עין איה]
Rav Yehudah expounded in honor of Torah: "Listen and hear Israel, today you became a nation". Did they become a nation on that day? This was at the end of their 40 years in the desert! Rather it teaches that Torah is beloved to those who learn it every day as it was on the day they received it on Har Sinai.
A very nice "mussar vort". The pasuk says "today" and from this we learn that EVERY DAY Torah is beloved as if we received it "today". Lovely. But that is not what the pasuk is talking about. The pasuk is saying that TODAY we became a nation. Not that TODAY we learn as if received the Torah today at Sinai. It is not nice to impose your own personal ideas upon psukim that are saying nothing of the sort.
In fact, as in every maamar chazal, there is a deep idea here and the pasuk is saying EXACTLY what the Rav Yehuda expounded.
What happens to most nations is that they undergo radical changes. Different governments, different philosophies, attitudes, behaviors etc. Sometime changes come from within and sometimes due to outside forces that they lack the power to withstand. Thus, they change and don't remain the same nation.
The secret of the Jewish people is our capacity to remain faithful to our past no matter what the circumstances. This gives us the ability to remain a nation regardless of any internal or external pressures. The way to remain fresh and filled with vitality is to view our past as if it is the present. The past is old and stale. Who reads a newspaper from last year? Who cares what the weather was January 19 1989! Or what President Nixon said about Russia. They were a bunch of Russiaim [רשעים] anyway. That was then - this is now.
If we want to retain out vitality as a nation, the Torah must constantly remain fresh. The most CURRENT EVENT is whatever we happened to be learning at that time. The Torah is not an ancient Hebraic document from the dark ages but the most current, exciting, "hip" [if it is מותר to call the Torah that], "with it" [ditto] book, EVER. Torah is the eternal, immutable, word of Hashem and thus NEVER gets old. Since that is our attitude and approach to Torah, we are assured that we will remain vital, vibrant, alive and engaged as a nation forever.
Now the gemara dances "היום הזה נהיית לעם" - Today you became a nation. Today? You became a nation a looong time ago?
No. TODAY you learn as if you received the Torah TODAY and that gives you the power to remain a nation. The winds of change will not sweep over you if you retain an eternally fresh connection to Torah.
That was Rebbi Yehuda's drasha לכבוד התורה. Is there any greater כבוד התורה that showing how it kept us alive as a ntion for all of these years?! Is there any greater כבוד התורה to say that we learn it as if we received it today. The same pasuk or mishna that we learned a thousand times, we learn yet again with renewed gusto each and every time. THAT is כבוד התורה.
Sweet friends!! The pasht is geshmakkk but not the tachlis. The tachlis is to really relate to Torah with excitement. There is NOTHING more exciting than a daf gemara, than chumash with meforshim, than a teshuva sefer that goes deep into the trenches of דבר ה' זו הלכה.
Taste and see. In that merit the Jewish people will remain forever vital and young.
