Why do people have such strong sexual desires? The average man is often consumed by this desire [women less so, but they of course also have it]. In our day and age, we are flooded with sexual images and innuendo wherever we go - be it in the general media, social media, advertising, novels etc. etc. Chazal understood this overpowering desire and therefore instituted the mechitza, because EVEN IN A HOLY SANCTUARY, with an Aron Kodesh, Sifrei Torah, shelves of sefarim etc. etc. man can't be trusted to have pure thoughts.
It is not our fault. No one is at "fault". Hashem made us this way and there is nothing to be embarrassed about. He did it for a GOOD REASON!! Why? Wouldn't life have been easier if we wouldn't be required to constantly control and suppress our passions?
Easier? Yes. But life isn't SUPPOSED to be easy.
He implanted women with a desire to look beautiful and men with a desire for a beautiful woman and PRESTO - seven billion people and counting. So one reason we have this [mutual] attraction is in order to populate our world - פרו ורבו ומלאו את הארץ!
Another facet of this desire is that our world is an imperfect world and we ANXIOUSLY AWAIT the perfected world that is yet to come. This desire is essentially to create a future [i.e. offspring]. Hidden in the deeper recesses of our chemical attraction [that is why we call it "chemistry" when a man and woman click - it has a lot to do with chemicals] is a desire to live in the holy futuristic world.
A person receives the title of "Tzadik" when he guards his Bris Kodesh. He doesn't look at anything immodest, he doesn't read the New York Post or any other publication that finds it necessary to report about immodest matters in an immodest, crude way. He is very careful about Internet use and has a filter to make sure he remains clean.
