Would any responsible parent allow his or her child to freely roam New York City at all hours of the day and night? Of course not. That would be dangerous. The parent might justifiably be reported to social services and the child might be taken away and given over to responsible guardians.
I was reading about a sexual predator who was an administrator in an Orthodox affiliated school and previously taught in a post high school program in Israel [where I too was affiliated]. He was caught by the FBI and is now locked up [- B"H!]. More and more students are coming forward with their stories of his strange Internet behavior. He would set up fake accounts with all types of aliases, send pornographic pictures and attempt to lure the students into doing the same.
So this is GREAT for the media because stories like these increase ratings and thereby - revenue. But what does it mean for US who are repelled by this salacious garbage??
In my humble [but not humble enough to keep it to myself...] opinion: KEEP YOUR CHILDREN AWAY FROM FACEBOOK AND THE LIKE WHERE THESE SICKOS BAIT INNOCENT PEOPLE INTO HORRIFIC PLACES OF IMPURITY. To be negligent is to cause potential irreparable danger to your child's psyche and soul. Allowing one's child to freely roam the web is tantamount to letting him walk around Harlem at 2:30am. Except that since here what is at risk is his or her soul - it could be worse.
What SHOCKS me is that instead of that being the message I am hearing, life continues as always. [Exception: In Bergen County there is a joint initiative between the numerous schools to more closely monitor the computer use of children].
