A Public Shehakol On Wine

It once happened at a wedding that the Rabbi accidentally made a shehakol instead of a borei pri hagofen on the wine under the chuppah. This is a problem:-).

We know that wine warrants a borei pri hagofen but we also know that shehakol covers all foods bi-dieved, after the bracha was already made. Ideally of course, one should not make shehakol on all foods.

So the question arose - should the Rabbi make a hagofen on the wine? That is what he did. Rav Tzvi Pesach Frank argued that this was a mistake. The shehakol he said covered the wine and what's done is done and there is no use in crying [or making a new bracha] over spilled milk - or wine. Others argued back that the Rabbi is only the agent of the chosson and the chosson doesn't want him to make a bi-dieved bracha but a lichatchila bracha. When I send someone to complete a task I want him to do it in the completely correct manner. Since the chosson wouldn't want such a bracha - the Rabbi was correct in making the hagofen. However, an argument can be made that the chosson would not want the Rabbi to make a hagofen because that would render the shehakol an unnecessary and thus forbidden bracha. So even the chosson wouldn't want the Rabbi to correct himself. Then the argument was made that it is not so simple that the Rabbi is the chosson's agent at all so it doesn't matter what the chosson wants and the shehakol was enough.

Jews love to argue:-)
