The Sfas Emes on Zionism

Ben Gurion is quoted as saying that if one lives in Israel and doesn't believe in miracles he is not a realist. 

The Sfas Emes [li-havdil 1,000,000 times] expresses a similar idea in Parshas Shelach [תרס"ג]:

עבדים היינו לפרעה במצרים. טעם ענין זה כי בני ישראל כל בריאתם למעלה מהטבע והמזלות. שכן ראה אברהם אבינו עליו השלום במזל שאינו מוליד. והקב"ה השיב לו אין מזל לישראל כדאיתא בגמרא. וקשה ישראל מאן דכר שמיה. רק שהקב"ה השיב לו לפי שישראל מוכנים ליצא מחלציך ואין מזל לישראל לכן כל לידת בני ישראל היתה למעלה מן המזל... שיצחק בא מלמעלה מן המזל ונולד שלא בדרך הטבע. ולכן אין לבני ישראל מציאות בעולם הזה ובמזלות ולכן היו גרים ועבדים. ולכן התחיל הגירות מלידת יצחק גר יהיה זרעך ולכן עבדים היינו לפרעה שהוא רמז למזל טלה ראש כל המזלות. ולפי שאין מזל לישראל ועולם הזה תליא במזלות. היו בני ישראל משועבדים לפרעה תחת מזל טלה והקב"ה הוציאנו משם בדרך נס ונתן לנו ארץ ישראל בדרך נס שמצד הטבע אין לנו מקום בעולם הזה. ולכן צוה לשחוט טלה לפסח להראות כי אין מזל לישראל והם למעלה מהנהגת המזלות.

R' Reuvan Raz [formerly Zechariah] who teaches in Hakotel and Michlala wrote an article where he claims that the Sfas Emes was not a supporter of the Zionist movement because they were trying to conquer and settle Israel through natural means but in Eretz Yisrael things must be done miraculously. 

Maybe if the Sfas Emes were alive today and witnessed all of the miracles he would change his mind. Among the miracles: That we haven't been swallowed up by our countless-blood-thirsty-Jihad-loving-Shariah-proponents enemies. The flourishing of Torah and Yeshivos and Kollelim. The fact the the Charedi world continues to exist despite the impossible economic situation [mother works at a low paying job, father gets small stipend from kollel, very large families with expenses through the roof including weddings and after]. There may be many people under the poverty line here but they all have a roof over their heads, a refrigerator, washing machine, cell phones etc. etc. Nisei nissim.
