A thought:
When a person decides to cling to the Light of Hashem that shines in the soul of the Jewish people, to all of the souls and all of the generations from beginning to end, he automatically clings to the Light of Hashem that dwells in the totality of humankind of which the Jewish people are the essence. Through this, he clings to the Light of Hashem that exists in the entire creation which is refracted through the soul of man and he then clings to the G-dliness which is above creation at which time his soul is automatically filled with holiness and great glory and strength. When his spiritual energy is enhanced, he thereby enhances the collective soul of the Jewish people, since he is part of that soul and in turn that adds strength to all of mankind and all of the world.
That is the meaning of the pasuk תנו עז לאלהים - Give strength to Hashem. How can we give Hashem strength? The answer is by connecting ourselves to His Light and that of the Jewish people.
The pasuk continues על ישראל גאוותו - On the Jewish people is his pride. Through us, He is revealed.
כשהאדם משים את לבו ודעתו להתדבק באור האלוהי, המאיר בכנסת ישראל בכללה, בכל הנשמות ובכל הדורות מראשית ועד אחרית, מתדבק הוא על ידי זה ממילא באור האלוהות השורה בכללות שיעור הקומה של כלל האדם, שכנסת ישראל היא מרכזה ותמציתה, ועל ידי זה הוא מתדבק גם כן בכללות האור של האלוהות המתגלה בכל ההויה, שבצד העליון של נשמת האדם משתקפת כל תמציתה, וממילא מקשר הוא בזה את דעתו לדבקות באלוהות העליונה שלמעלה מכל ההויה, ונפשו מתמלאה חיות מלא קודש ותפארת גדולה וגבורה, ובתוספות כחו מוסיף הוא כח בכללות כנסת ישראל, מפני שהוא חלק ממנה, וממילא מוסיף הוא כח בקומת האדם ובכל העולמות, שנאמר תנו עז לאלוהים, על ישראל גאותו ועזו בשחקים, נורא אלוהים ממקדשיך, אל ישראל הוא נותן עז ותעצמות לעם, ברוך אלוהים.
The upshot of this teaching is that we have the power, through our desires and aspirations, to add strength to the Jewish people, all of mankind and Hashem himself.
On the other hand, when a person goes down - he brings everyone down with him, whether we are aware of it or not. This notion of "live and let live" is completely foreign to our world view. Just like a person in a boat in the middle of the ocean can drill a hole and tell everyone - Hey, I am only drilling under myself. No sir - when you go down, we all go down with you.
When I hear and read of the terrible pgamim in the world today, especially pgam ha-bris, it shakes my soul to the core. It is not just that people are choosing to sin and that is their own business. ALL of our souls are being contaminated. The ONLY recourse we have is to add light by guarding ourselves, our eyes, our thoughts and to strive to cling to Hashem and experience his Light and love.
A thought that is a little bit of fodder for the neshama.
