The Churban

Rabbi David Stav related that he remembers how he was a student at the Mercaz HaRav Yeshiva and was riding on the #1 bus to the Kotel. An young Ethiopian man came on the bus and asked the secular driver if it goes to the Beis Hamikdash.

The secular driver looked at him incomprehensibly and said to him: "You must have meant the Kotel. The Beis Hamikdash has already been destroyed."

And the young man insisted, "No, I want to go to the Beis Hamikdash!" And handed the driver the money.

The annoyed driver replied "But I told you. I'm not going to the Beis Hamikdash because there is no Beis Hamikdash. It was destroyed. There is the Kotel Hamaaravi. Do you want to go to the Kotel?"

Then the young Ethiopian said maybe to himself, maybe to the driver: "There is no Beis Hamikdash.....? ".

And burst into tears.

------------

Why don't we cry when we think about the fact that the Beis Hamikdash was destroyed? B/c got used to the idea.
Why don't we cry abt. the Holocaust? Is it OK b/c it happened before we were born? No. We just got used to it.
Why don't we cry when we think of all the sick people lying in hospital beds right now?
Why don't we cry when we think of all the orphans and widows among us?
There are some things we should never get used to.
Then there is hope we will do everything we can to fix the world.
