For the life of me, I can't understand how people are so enamored with the Israeli government from the birth of the State until now, in light of the psak of the Rambam in Hilchos Melachim [1-7]:
וְכָל מִי שֶׁאֵין בּוֹ יִרְאַת שָׁמַיִם אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁחָכְמָתוֹ מְרֻבָּה אֵין מְמַנִּין אוֹתוֹ לְמִנּוּי מִן הַמִּנּוּיִין שֶׁבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל. [האם הכוונה שאין המינוי חל או שאסור?]
However, under no circumstance should a person who lacks the fear of God be appointed to any position in Israel, even though he possesses much knowledge.
I don't doubt for a second that it is better than the alternative and that it is the Hand of Hashem [as is everything - הכל בידי שמים חוץ ....]. But political leaders who not only lack Yiras Shomayim but wantonly trample the Torah every day in their personal lives and many would like little more than to see Israel turn into a totally secular country is not a phenomenon worthy of celebration.
