A Contemplative Glance at Contemporary Reality
It is related in the Gemara (Maseches Yoma 20b):
“Rabbi Levi said: Why is a person’s voice not heard by day as it is heard by night? Because of the solar sphere that saws through the heavens like a woodsman sawing through cedars... Our Sages taught: Were it not for the solar sphere, the clamor of the multitudes of Rome would be heard; and were it not for the clamor of the multitudes of Rome, the sound of the solar sphere would be heard.”
Before us stand two polarized, antithetical voices, each vying to eclipse the other. On one flank stands “the sound of the solar sphere sawing through the heavens,” which embodies the esoteric depth of the verse: “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims His handiwork” (Tehillim 19:2). As explained by a disciple of the Vilna Gaon (cf. Megaleh Amukos, Parshas Korach), the sun reigns as sovereign within the celestial firmament, and all physical existence resides “under the sun.” The sun serves as the prime herald testifying to the glory of the Almighty, and through its agency, the entire cosmos proclaims His handiwork.
This sublime cosmic hymn ought to have resonated throughout the world with pristine clarity, were it not for “the clamor of the multitudes of Rome” that rises up to suppress it. Indeed, this is the quintessential function of Rome’s din in the world: to blur the testimony of Creation and to numb humanity’s capacity to listen. The more forcefully and explicitly the Creator summons humanity, the more Rome’s cacophony amplifies its volume to deafen human ears.
More insidious still, the clamor of Rome commandeers all voices—including the very resonance of the solar sphere—and conscripts them into an inverted chorus. Thus, rather than the sun bearing witness to the glory of its Maker, the noise of Rome harnesses its brilliance to proclaim the absolute antithesis.
Contemporary circumstances compel us to look reality squarely in the face. The tumult of Rome saws today with deafening intensity. We are charged with summoning all our spiritual faculties to discern that pure, subtle voice declaring the glory of God and proclaiming His handiwork—to extricate it and rescue it from amidst the uproar.
True, we maintain as an operative principle that “trei kalei lo mishtam’ei” (two simultaneous voices cannot be clearly distinguished); yet Chazal teach that when one particular voice is deeply beloved by the listener, it can be isolated and absorbed even from amidst a roar. If the voice of Truth is precious to us, we will be able to incline our ear toward it, even while Rome’s din seeks to overshadow it and subsume it within its corrupted chorus.
Our contemporary predicament is suspended between two poles: on the one hand, the clamor of Rome is ubiquitous on every tongue; on the other hand, Hakadosh Baruch Hu speaks to us with unprecedented clarity and power. It is precisely because of this divine proximity that Rome’s noise redoubles its strength, laboring to confound and obstruct the human heart lest it perceive the Divine call.
The Trajectory of Faith in Creation: Avraham Avinu as the Pillar of the Cosmos
The foundational axiom, sufficient in itself to dispel every philosophical perplexity, is anchored in the dictum of our Sages: “Everything the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He created solely for His glory.” The Creator brought the universe into existence so that there would be found within it an earthly being who acknowledges His reality, believes in Him, and offers thanksgiving. As the Ramban elucidates at the conclusion of Parshas Bo (Shemos 13:16):
“For we possess no other rationale for the primordial creation, nor does the Supreme God desire anything of the lower realms, other than that man should know and offer praise to his God Who created him.”
This constitutes the singular telos of Creation. Toward this ultimate destiny the Creator steers the entire arc of human history: l’ishtamode’a lei—that His sovereign presence be recognized within His domain.
This was the primordial truth unveiled by Avraham Avinu. The Rambam opens Hilchos Avodah Zarah (1:1) by charting the historical trajectory of humanity’s descent:
“In the days of Enosh, mankind fell into a profound error, and the counsel of the wise of that generation was confounded; Enosh himself was among those who erred.”
On the verse, “And to Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh; then it was begun (huchal) to call upon the name of Hashem” (Bereishis 4:26), Chazal expound that “huchal” carries the connotation of chullin (profanation)—that they attributed Divine sanctity to the celestial hosts. From that tragic juncture, the world deviated from the path of truth. Chazal note (Zohar, Vayikra 48a; and the Rishonim) that man is designated by four distinct appellations: Adam, Ish, Gever, and Enosh. The name Enosh denotes the lowest, most degraded state of spiritual amnesia, rooted in the etymology of oblivion (as in the Aramaic: liba d’inshi inshei—Sanhedrin 35a; and scripturally: nashisi tovah—Eichah 3:17, signifying that which is forgotten and cast aside). Already by the third generation, man had forgotten his Source, paving the path toward idolatry.
As epochs passed, humanity became entrenched in its fallacies, until the Name of the Creator was wholly forgotten and all recognition of His constant, guiding Providence faded. For twenty generations, from Adam until Avraham, the cosmos languished in the dark night of oblivion. Humanity rallied around the ethos of “let us make for ourselves a name, lest we be scattered”—a grand conspiracy of rebellion aimed at eradicating the awareness of the Creator and asserting autonomous mastery over the world.
Thus the Rambam continues (ibid., Halachah 2):
“And in this manner, the world proceeded and deteriorated, until there arose the pillar of the cosmos—namely, our father, Avraham.”
On the verse, “These are the generations of the heaven and of the earth when they were created (b’hibar’am)” (Bereishis 2:4), Rabbi Yehoshua ben Korchah expounded (Bereishis Rabbah 12:9): “B’hibar’am—b’Avraham: in the merit of Avraham.” It is by virtue of Avraham that the universe endures; he is the veritable amudo shel olam. In the fractured era of the Dispersion (Dor Haflagah), Avraham emerged into the world, fulfilling the prophecy of Yeshayahu (51:1–2): “Look unto the rock whence ye were hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye were digged. Look unto Avraham your father, and unto Sarah that bore you; for when he was but one I called him, and blessed him, and increased him.”
Avraham was singular in his generation. Our Sages expounded (Bereishis Rabbah 39:3) on the verse, “We have a little sister” (Shir HaShirim 8:8): “This refers to Avraham, who mended (i’chah) all the inhabitants of the world... like one who stitches together a tear.” The fabric of the cosmos had been torn asunder from its Creator; Avraham arrived and stitched Creation back into an intimate, living communion with its Maker.
All this Avraham accomplished through the singular power of his own intellectual and spiritual resolve, as the Rambam records (ibid., Halachah 3):
“As soon as this giant was weaned, his mind began to soar while he was yet a child. He began to reflect day and night, marveling: How is it possible that this celestial sphere should revolve constantly without a Director? Who causes it to rotate, for it cannot turn of its own accord? He had neither mentor nor instructor, but was submerged in Ur Kasdim among foolish idolaters... Yet his heart roamed and contemplated until he attained the path of truth... and he knew that there is one God, Who directs the sphere and created all... And at forty years of age, Avraham recognized his Creator.”
Having seized upon the truth, he debated his contemporaries, smashed their idols, and proclaimed that it is unbefitting to worship anything other than the God of the Universe. When his position was crystallized and their sophistries could not withstand his wisdom, the local king sought to execute him. A miracle occurred; he escaped to Charan and thence to Canaan, proclaiming the Name of Hashem and rallying tens of thousands: “And Avraham planted an eshel (tamarisk tree) in Be’er Sheva, and called there on the name of Hashem, the Everlasting God” (Bereishis 21:33).
Avraham transmitted this fundamental tradition to his son Yitzchak; Yitzchak conveyed it to Yaakov; Yaakov set apart the tribe of Levi, establishing a house of study to instruct in the ways of Hashem and preserve the charge of Avraham. This momentum deepened until an entire nation cognizant of Hashem took root. Even when, during the Egyptian bondage, this foundational awareness was almost eclipsed, Hakadosh Baruch Hu redeemed them—a redemption that serves as the root and prototype for all future redemptions.
Thus, the entire tapestry of history hinges upon this single axis: Avraham was chosen, he sired Yitzchak, and Yitzchak sired Yaakov, as we recite on the Seder night: “And I took your father Avraham from beyond the river... and gave unto him Yitzchak; and I gave unto Yitzchak Yaakov and Esav...” (Yehoshua 24:3–4). This is the nation of whom it was proclaimed: “This people have I formed for Myself; they shall recite My praise” (Yeshayahu 43:21).
“Hashem Elokeinu – Hashem Echad”: The Destiny of Future Revelation
Every day we accept the yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven (ol Malchus Shamayim), declaring: “Hear, O Israel: Hashem our God, Hashem is One” (Devarim 6:4). Rashi elucidates:
“‘Hashem Elokeinu’—He is our God now, and not the God of the nations; ‘Hashem Echad’—He is destined to be recognized as the One God universally, as it is stated (Tzefanyah 3:9): ‘For then will I turn to the peoples a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of Hashem,’ and as it is stated (Zechariah 14:9): ‘On that day Hashem shall be One, and His Name One.’”
Our current reality is inherently fractured, for at present, it is only Klal Yisrael that consciously acknowledges His sovereignty. Our sacred mission is to serve as the conduit through which the glory of Heaven is ultimately unveiled to all of mankind, as we plead in our prayers: “Reign over the entire universe in Your glory,” and “May every created being know that You have created it.” Complete Redemption (Geulah Sheleimah) means that the truth currently entrusted to our custody will permeate all of human consciousness. This transformation will occur only when the grand confusion of the world—wherein reality is inverted against Divine truth—is definitively shattered.
Ma’aseh Avos Siman La-Banim: Redemption in the Merit of Yitzchak and the Mystery of Ketz Chai
The events that unfolded within the domestic sphere of Avraham Avinu constitute the archetype: Ma’aseh Avos siman la-banim—the deeds of the Patriarchs are an augury and blueprint for their descendants. Divine Providence toward Klal Yisrael is an exact mirror of the Patriarchal narratives. The Tannaim and Amoraim immersed themselves in the biblical encounter between Yaakov and Esav to discern how to navigate the corridors of Roman power; this was no mere geopolitical tactic, but a profound penetration into the metaphysical roots of history.
In the Gemara (Pesachim 119b), the Sages expound upon the verse: “And the child grew, and was weaned; and Avraham made a great feast on the day that Yitzchak was weaned” (Bereishis 21:8):
“The Holy One, blessed be He, will make a grand banquet for the righteous on the day He bestows His lovingkindness (yigmol chasdo) upon the seed of Yitzchak.”
This eschatological feast, over which Dovid HaMelech will lift the Cup of Blessing, is uniquely ascribed to the descendants of Yitzchak. In a similar vein, the Gemara relates (Shabbos 89b) that in the World to Come, Hakadosh Baruch Hu will confront Avraham and Yaakov, saying, “Your children have sinned,” and both will respond, “Let them be erased for the sanctification of Your Name.” Only Yitzchak will advocate on their behalf, saying: “Ribono shel Olam, are they my sons and not Your sons?... And how much did they really sin? Half falls upon me, and half upon You...” Whereupon Israel will turn to him and exclaim, “Ki atah Avinu—For you are our father!” Salvation and redemption are thus intimately bound up with the person of Yitzchak.
Yitzchak is the sole Patriarch upon whom Hashem conferred His Name during his lifetime (“Elokei Yitzchak”), for his vitality derived directly from the Akeidah—from the very state of having been rendered into ashes. “The ashes of Yitzchak remain gathered and preserved before Him.” We are the descendants of one who returned to life after having already tasted the state of ash.
The Hebrew letters of the name יצח״ק (Yitzchak) form the anagram ק״ץ ח״י (Ketz Chai—the "Living End"). This designates a mode of existence rooted in the realm of Techiyas HaMeisim (the Resurrection of the Dead)—a vitality that emerges after the terminus of nature. For this reason, the Jewish people are designated “Ephraim” (as noted in Tosafos), for we are born of a double measure of ash (efer): from Avraham, who declared “I am but dust and ash,” and from the consecrated ashes of Yitzchak. A nation forged from this transcendent dimension can never be extinguished; its life-force is anchored beyond the horizons of mortal fragility.
This explains why the first blessing of the Shemoneh Esreh (Magen Avraham) corresponds to Avraham, while the second blessing (Mechayei HaMeisim—the Reviver of the Dead) corresponds to Yitzchak. The ultimate Redemption hinges upon the potency of Yitzchak—the esoteric reality of life born out of dissolution. Concerning the genesis of man, Scripture states: “Vayyitzer Hashem Elokim es ha-adam” (Bereishis 2:7) with a double Yud—signifying a formation for this world, and a formation for the Resurrection. This duality was actualized in Yitzchak: a living man who is the living embodiment of Ketz Chai.
The Faith of Yishmael: “For He is Your Seed”
Yitzchak was born to Avraham years after Yishmael had already established his presence and held dominion within the household of Avraham. Even upon receiving the tidings of Yitzchak’s impending birth, Avraham pleaded: “Oh that Yishmael might live before You!” (Bereishis 17:18).
Chazal and the Rishonim instruct us that Yishmael and his progeny preserve a profound signature of Avrahamic faith. They proclaim the absolute Unity of God and exhibit a staggering capacity for martyrdom (mesiras nefesh) on its behalf. Of Avraham it is written: “And he planted an eshel in Be’er Sheva and called there upon the name of Hashem” (Bereishis 21:33), which Reish Lakish expounded (Sotah 10b): “Read not ‘he called’ (vayikra), but ‘he caused to call’ (vayikri)—he brought the Name of Heaven into the mouths of every passerby.” Avraham imprinted the consciousness of God onto humanity.
In the narrative of Yishmael’s banishment, Avraham was told: “For in Yitzchak shall your seed be called; and also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is your seed” (Bereishis 21:12–13). The Covenant was sealed exclusively through Yitzchak; Yishmael was left in the state of a pereh adam (a wild man), as it is written: “And he dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer; and he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran” (ibid., 20–21).
Our masters revealed (cf. Megaleh Amukos, Va’eschanan 107) that פָּארָאן (Paran) shares the exact numerical value (gematria) of אֶשֶׁל (Eshel = 331). Yishmael seized Avraham’s Eshel—the public proclamation of the Divine Name—yet he manifested it through the raw, unrefined nature of a pereh adam in the desert.
When Hakadosh Baruch Hu revealed Himself at Sinai, Scripture proclaims: “Hashem came from Sinai, and rose from Se’ir unto them; He shined forth from Mount Paran” (Devarim 33:2). Just as Se’ir represents the root of Esav, so Paran represents the primal root of Yishmael, aligned against the Eshel. This is the inner meaning of “because he is your seed”: Yishmael inherited from Avraham the conceptual framework of Monotheism and Providence, yet he channeled it as “a wild ass used to the wilderness” (Yirmeyahu 2:24). Morally and spiritually, his disposition may harbor brutality, yet the root of his monotheistic conviction remains fierce, unyielding, and driven by self-sacrifice.
Through modern, secularized eyes, the fanaticism of the descendants of Yishmael is often dismissed as primitive savagery. In truth, it is an intense residue seared into them from the seed of Avraham (“for he is your seed”). The Rambam in Moreh Nevuchim devotes vast treatises to debating the Kalam (the Islamic scholastic theologians), precisely because theirs was a conceptual system endowed with immense theological vigor. Though it is not the Torah of Truth, it possesses ferocious religious passion.
The potency of Yishmael’s faith was so formidable that Avraham himself could not see cause to dismiss him. It required a direct, categorical prophecy from Hakadosh Baruch Hu: “Whatever Sarah says unto you, hearken unto her voice, for in Yitzchak shall your seed be called.” Only through the prophetic acuity of Sarah Imeinu and an explicit Divine mandate—which felt compelled to console him, “Let it not be grievous in your sight because of the lad”—was Yishmael severed from the legacy of the Covenant.
Yishmael and Yitzchak: The Husk Preceding the Fruit
Flawless, elevated faith is not the faith of the pereh adam, but the faith of Adam in its sanctified sense—as Chazal state, “You are called Adam.” This elevated station could emerge only after the expulsion of Yishmael and the establishment of the Covenant with Yitzchak.
It is recorded in the works of Kabbalah (cf. Likkutei Torah of the Ari z”l, Vayeira; Shir HaShirim 9d) that הגר (Hagar) shares the gematria of יצחק (Yitzchak = 208), and the combination of אברם הגר (Avram Hagar) equals the numerical value of ישמעאל (Yishmael = 451)—Avram prior to the integration of the letter Hei (Avraham, alluding to b’hibar’am). The chronological precedence of Yishmael over Yitzchak embodies the deep kabbalistic axiom: kelipah kodemes la-pri—the protective husk inevitably precedes the maturation of the fruit.
In the natural order, a fruit develops only after the shell emerges to shelter it. Throughout the developmental process, a crucial sorting takes place: the coarse matter coalesces into the outer shell, while the purified essence concentrates within the fruit. Ultimately, the husk is cast aside, and the fruit stands in pristine splendor. Thus was Yishmael the kelipah that preceded the holy fruit.
Herein lies the paradigm of Ma’aseh Avos siman la-banim: the manifestation of the fully realized human stature requires a searing process of extraction from the kelipah that anticipates it. Yishmael was so thoroughly embedded within the Avrahamic household that, had it not been for Sarah’s prophetic discernment, he would have been presumed the natural heir. Sarah perceived reality in its unvarnished essence: “And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne unto Avraham, making sport (metzachek)” (Bereishis 21:9). As Rashi elucidates, metzachek hints at the three cardinal abominations: idolatry, sexual immorality, and bloodshed.
And when Avraham expelled him, Scripture records: “And Avraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder (sam al shichmah), and the child, and sent her away” (ibid., 14). The holy Zohar (I, 118b) expounds that “sam al shichmah” denotes that he placed upon her the yoke of the pure faith of Avraham’s house. From that moment onward, Yishmael abandoned idolatry; yet the ancestral tendencies toward violence and license (pereh adam) remained woven into his fabric.
The cultivation of Yitzchak was thus purchased through anguish and spiritual exertion akin to the tearing of living flesh. Only through the eviction of Yishmael was it clarified that “in Yitzchak shall your seed be called”—in him, and none other.
This is the ultimate Divine desideratum in all of Creation: to manifest the refined human archetype of Yitzchak. The faith of Yishmael, despite its ferocity and readiness for self-immolation, remains within the realm of the kelipah—and woe unto us that we must look to them to be reminded of what religious passion looks like! The pristine, luminous faith of Israel has yet to fully manifest across the broader community, remaining preserved for the present among the holy remnants who serve Hashem in truth.
Contemporary Reality: Between the Eclipse of Faith and the Herald of Redemption
Because we have not yet fully ascended to the elevated plateau of Yitzchak’s faith, an acute spiritual void has been wrought: “He has departed from the category of Yishmael, yet has not entered the category of Yitzchak.” Consequently, we bear witness today to phenomena of virulent, ideological heresy, championed specifically by members of our own nation with an obsessive fanaticism unknown among the Gentiles.
Yet anyone endowed with spiritual discernment understands that mortal leaders are not orchestrating these macro-historical developments of their own volition. The politicians and potentates on the world stage are nothing more than instruments in the grip of Divine Providence, as the verse proclaims: “If they were wise, they would understand this, they would discern their end... How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had given them over, and Hashem had delivered them up?” (Devarim 32:29–30). The tectonic shifts of history transcend the stature of the figures strutting upon the stage. The clamor of Rome creates an uproar solely to obscure this transcendent truth—to drown out the “Voice of Hashem in power” guiding His universe.
This is that very same roar of Rome that conspires against the eternal destiny of Israel, murmuring: “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance” (Tehillim 83:5). Whether through physical aggression or insidious spiritual subversion, the singular objective of these divisive forces is to erode the sanctified uniqueness of Israel as “a nation that dwells alone.” Yet history has demonstrated time and again that all such enterprises are destined for utter ruin.
For whoever inclines his ear to the internal frequency of existence, there pierces through the din the magnificent resonance of the solar sphere sawing through the heavens, testifying: “The heavens declare the glory of God.” Hakadosh Baruch Hu is steering His world along the exact trajectory traced within the house of Avraham: toward the definitive vindication of Yitzchak and the redemption of his seed.
Whoever binds himself to Yitzchak—to the uncompromised faith of the Covenant—will merit to participate in that glorious Redemption. But whoever clings to the worldview of Yishmael or allows himself to be swept away by the decadent clamor of Rome will ultimately disintegrate and fade away.
The prophet Yeshayahu warns of the End of Days: “For by fire will Hashem contend, and by His sword with all flesh; and the slain of Hashem shall be many... they shall be consumed together, says Hashem” (Yeshayahu 66:16–17). The trajectory is clear: only those who align themselves with the camp of pristine faith and holiness will endure to witness the Final Consummation (Ketz HaYamin).
It is incumbent upon us to implore Divine mercy and attune our hearing to the Voice of the Creator speaking to us from within the convulsions of the hour. Let us not permit the tumult of Rome to deafen our souls. We are the children of the Divine Covenant, holding fast to the eternal promise: “And My covenant will I establish with Yitzchak.” The authentic faith of Yitzchak, though presently rare and hidden, is destined to encompass the entire earth. Fortunate is the individual who takes these matters to heart. In that merit, may Hashem shield us, preserve us, and redeem us with an everlasting Redemption.
