“Through This Shall You Know That Hashem Sent Me” — Korach and the Nevuah of Moshe Rabbeinu

“Through This Shall You Know That Hashem Sent Me” — Korach and the Nevuah of Moshe Rabbeinu

Tamtzis HaYesodos (Executive Summary of the Principles): Emunas Moshe Rabbeinu rests exclusively upon Ma’amad Har Sinai, not on external miracles | Korach’s challenge did not stem from an epistemological flaw in the truth itself, but rather tested whether such a de’ah could intrinsically reside within the Kahal | The swallowing of Korach severed and purged the very metaphysical possibility of kefirah from within the Kahal | “V’gam becha ya’aminu l’olam” establishes an irrevocable ontological reality of emunah within Klal Yisrael | Regarding anyone who embraces heresy, it is an established axiom that his forebears did not stand at Har Sinai | Through the episode of Korach, it was clarified that this alien da’as does not originate from the essence of the Kahal | The perennial imperative for all generations is to tether oneself to Ma’amad Har Sinai and grasp with absolute clarity: Moshe emes v’Toraso emes.

I. The Prophecy of Moshe Rabbeinu: “Bizos Teid’un Ki Hashem Shlachani”

In our parshah, the Torah states (Bamidbar 16:28–29):

“And Moshe said: Through this shall you know that Hashem has sent me to perform all these deeds, that they are not of my own heart. If these men die like the death of all men, and the common fate of all men be visited upon them, then Hashem did not send me.”

Rashi notes:

“‘Then Hashem did not send me’ — rather, I acted entirely on my own accord, and he is fully justified in opposing me.”

This presents an astonishing conceptual difficulty: How could Moshe Rabbeinu entertain such an unfathomable hava amina that “Hashem did not send me”? This is the absolute yesod ha-yisodos upon which the entire Torah hinges; if this point of departure were to collapse, chalilah, all of Creation would cease to exist!

“The Jewish People Did Not Believe in Moshe Because of the Signs”

The Rambam formulates this explicitly (Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah 8:1):

“Moshe Rabbeinu was not believed by Israel on account of the signs and wonders he performed; for whoever bases his belief on signs harbors a deficiency in his heart, as a sign can theoretically be wrought through sleight of hand or sorcery. Rather, all the signs Moshe performed in the wilderness were executed solely out of pragmatic necessity, not to furnish proof for his prophecy: When there was a need to drown the Egyptians, he split the sea and plunged them into it; when we required sustenance, he brought down the Manna; when they thirsted, he split the rock; when the assembly of Korach denied him, the earth swallowed them; and similarly with all other signs.

Wherein, then, lay their emunah in him? In Ma’amad Har Sinai. For our own eyes beheld, and no stranger’s; our own ears heard, and no other’s, the fire, the thunder, and the torches, as he approached the thick darkness and the Voice spoke unto him while we heard: ‘Moshe, Moshe, go say to them such and such’... And whence do we derive that Ma’amad Har Sinai alone constitutes the irreproachable verification of his prophecy? As it is stated: ‘Behold, I come to you in the thick of the cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you, and also in you shall they believe forever’ — implying that prior to this, their belief was not an enduring, immutable faith, but one shadowed by lingering speculation.”

The Rambam’s thesis is transparent: regarding the congregation of Korach, the veracity of Moshe Rabbeinu’s nevuah was never epistemologically in doubt. The sign Moshe wrought was purely an operational necessity (tzorech b’alma)—precisely akin to the provision of bread and water or the eradication of the Egyptians. The earth’s rupture was not designed to validate prophecy, but to remove an obstruction.

Yet this immediately triggers three formidable kashyas:

  1. The Rambam himself defines the incident as: “When the assembly of Korach denied him (kafru vo)”—demonstrating that the crux of the sin was an outright repudiation of Moshe’s prophecy!

  2. The pasuk articulates explicitly: “If these men die like the death of all men... then Hashem did not send me.” The central locus of the dispute was whether Hashem sent him, and the opening of the earth was invoked specifically to prove that “Hashem indeed sent me.” If so, does not Moshe’s prophecy lean upon the miracle of the earth swallowing them, rather than upon Ma’amad Har Sinai alone?

  3. If the Rambam codifies that Ma’amad Har Sinai stands as the singular, absolute verification containing no defect, why was Sinai insufficient for Adas Korach, compelling Moshe Rabbeinu to orchestrate a public mofes before all of Klal Yisrael to halt their seduction?

II. “Whoever Strays from the Path of the Religion—It Is Known That His Forebears Did Not Stand at Har Sinai”

To resolve this, we turn to the Rambam’s profound words in Iggeres Teiman, addressed to a holy Diaspora community reeling under the weight of persecution and spiritual disorientation:

“As for what you mentioned regarding the wavering of mind among some of our people, whose hearts have become unsettled, harboring new doubts and fainting in their conviction... this reality was already foretold through Daniel, a’h. The Creator informed us that as our exile lengthens and calamities multiply, many will abandon the faith, yield to doubt, and go astray... as it says (Daniel 12:10): ‘Many will be purified, cleansed, and refined; but the wicked will act wickedly, and none of the wicked will understand, while the discerning will understand.’ He further clarified that even among the maskilim and the discerning who endured earlier tribulations and remained firm in their faith... subsequent afflictions will prove harsher and more severe than the first... until they stumble, err, and lead others astray, leaving only a scant remnant, as it is written (ibid. 11:35): ‘And some of the discerning will stumble, to refine them, to purify, and to cleanse until the time of the end.’

Therefore, our brethren, take courage and lean upon these verses of truth... For none will grasp the true faith in such epochs except the wise and God-fearing from the seed of Ya’akov—the pure, unblemished lineage of whom it is said (Yoel 3:5): ‘And among the survivors whom Hashem calls.’ Scripture clarifies that these are elite individuals whose ancestors stood at Har Sinai and heard the Divine utterance from the mouth of the Gevurah... He revealed to us that all who stood at Sinai maintain unwavering emunah in the prophecy of Moshe Rabbeinu in everything conveyed through him—they, their children, and their descendants until the end of time... Consequently, let it be known: whoever strays from the path of the religion given at that assembly is demonstrably not of the seed of those people. And so our Sages, z’l, declared regarding anyone who harbors doubts about prophecy: ‘His forebears did not stand at Har Sinai!’”

This identical yesod is underscored by the Radak (Yechezkel 18:9):

“An eternal covenant is forged with the seed of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Ya’akov that they shall never cease to exist as a nation before the Almighty, and those who departed from the pale of our faith were never truly of their seed, but derived from the asafsuf (rabble) and the converts.”

The Rishonim establish an ironclad metaphysical reality: genuine kefirah and apostasy are fundamentally impossible for anyone whose forebears stood at Har Sinai. The covenant of “Lanu u’l’vaneinu ad olam” and “V’gam becha ya’aminu l’olam” is an indelible ontological imprint. The yetzer hara can precipitate sin, moral failing, or even idolatry driven by hedonistic impulse (avodah zarah l’te’avon); but categorical heresy regarding the foundational root of nevuah and Torah constitutes conclusive proof that a person’s ancestors never stood at Sinai.

Here the question erupts in full force: How are we to comprehend the affair of Korach? Korach was among the aristocracy of Shevet Levi—of whom the Torah testifies, “For they observed Your word and safeguarded Your covenant”! He stood at Sinai, was numbered among the bearers of the Aron, yet heretically proclaimed, as recorded in the Yerushalmi (Sanhedrin 10:1): “There is no Torah from Heaven, Moshe is no prophet, and Aharon is no Kohen Gadol”!

III. In the Wake of Korach: The Impossibility of Kefirah Within the Kahal

The resolution is singular and absolute.

Chazal reveal that the word Adas (עֲדַת) shares the root letters of Da’as (דַּעַת). “Therefore you and all your assembly (adasecha) who are banded together against Hashem” signifies: you and the entirety of your da’as.

The metaphysical consequence of Korach being swallowed was: “And the earth covered them, and they perished from the midst of the congregation (mi-toch ha-Kahal).” Together with their physical corporeal frames, that specific de’ah (ideology) was irrevocably uprooted and annihilated from the collective ontological fabric of the Kahal of Klal Yisrael forever.

The text specifies “mi-toch ha-Kahal”—and we pasken (Yevamos 47a): “Kahal geirim lav ikrei Kahal” (a congregation of converts is not designated ‘Kahal’). Outside the organic core of the Kahal—among the asafsuf and the Erev Rav—kefirah remains viable. But within the untainted Kahal Yisrael, from that watershed moment forward, the intrinsic presence of such heresy became utterly precluded.

This unlocks the precision of the Rambam’s formulation: the earth swallowing them was not intended to substantiate the truth of nevuah. It was an existential tzorech—a cosmic necessity to excise the very potential for inner-kefirah from within the Kahal. The mouth of the earth created bein hashmashos on Erev Shabbos served to cast that alien da’as entirely out of the order of Creation.

As the Ramban elucidates (Shemos 19:2):

“It is probable that they separated from their midst all the asafsuf among them, and Bnei Yisrael encamped alone before the mountain, with the Erev Rav behind them, for to Israel alone was the Torah given... and this is the meaning of ‘And Israel encamped there.’”

At Matan Torah, the essential station of each soul was delineated: Israel on one plane, the Erev Rav on another. The lineage of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Ya’akov is rooted in the one who proclaimed the Name of Hashem and smashed the idols—for whose sake the universe was fashioned (behibar’am — b’Avraham). For the true Jew, Ma’amad Har Sinai is neither abstract dialectic nor speculative deduction; it is an undeniable, breathing reality from which one cannot disengage, just as one cannot disengage from the air he breathes. A peripheral interloper can defect; but for one who stems from the organic seed of Israel, Sinai is the very fiber of his being, incapable of being severed.

IV. “Hashem Did Not Send Me” Addressed the Consummation of the Mission, Not the Veracity of His Words

We now arrive at a luminous understanding of Moshe Rabbeinu’s statement: “If these men die like the death of all men... then Hashem did not send me.”

The essential definition of a shelichus (mission) is delivering the principal’s mandate to its ultimate destination; the consummation of the shelichus depends entirely upon the reception of the message by those to whom it was addressed. Moshe Rabbeinu declared: If these deniers meet a natural demise within the normative order of nature, it demonstrates that this heretical da’as remains an integrated component of the shared ontological reality of the Kahal. If so, the Divine mission to imprint an unshakeable, eternal emunah within Klal Yisrael has not reached its ultimate consummation!

However, if a novel creation is wrought—if the earth cleaves open and swallows them alive into the abyss—it proves that they and their ideology are violently expelled beyond the parameters of legitimate reality, consumed and purged mi-toch ha-Kahal.

The miracle was not performed to demonstrate the authenticity of Sinai—for “our own eyes beheld, and no stranger’s.” Rather, the miracle established the covenant for all generations: that the da’as of Korach has been purged from the midst of Israel. Henceforth, no doubt can organically germinate within the Kahal. Whoever assumes the ideological mantle of Korach in subsequent eras does not belong to the inner Kahal, but descends from the residue of the asafsuf whose ancestors never stood at Sinai.

V. The Tree of Knowledge, the Erev Rav, and Alien Da’as

This traces the fundamental architecture of Creation:

  • Adam HaRishon was formed with pure, unadulterated da’as, commanded not to ingest from the Etz HaDa’as Tov V’Ra—meaning, not to internalize an alien consciousness from the outside.

  • At Ma’amad Har Sinai, the primordial contamination (zuhama) ceased, restoring Klal Yisrael to that singular, pristine consciousness: “You have been shown to know (lada’as) that Hashem is God, there is none else beside Him.”

  • At the Chet HaEgel, an alien da’as was re-injected by the Erev Rav. As the Vilna Gaon famously reveals: Erev Rav (עֵרֶב רַב) is numerically equivalent to Da’as (דַּעַת = 474). This is the counterfeit da’as that seeks to mislead Klal Yisrael, captured in the liturgical poetry of Ibn Ezra: “Look upon the true mistress, while the handmaid declares: ‘No, but your son is the dead one and my son is the living!’”

  • So too writes the Rambam (Hilchos Issurei Biah 13:18):

“For this reason the Sages said: Converts are as troublesome to Israel as a leprous lesion, for the majority revert for ulterior motives and mislead Israel... Go and learn what transpired in the wilderness at the Golden Calf and at Kivros HaTa’avah, and similarly most of the trials were initiated by the asafsuf.”

This alien da’as operates as a spiritual malady, laboring to twist the straight and rationalize the crooked. Our mandate is to hold steadfast to the Tree of Life and flee from this deceptive Tree of Knowledge.

VI. The Severe Crucible of the End of Days

The terrifying crucible of Ikvesa d’Meshicha is that this process of berur (refinement) reaches its zenith. The superficial majority is swept away, leaving solely “the survivors whom Hashem calls”—solitary individuals.

This metaphorical “handmaid” wraps herself in the garb of Torah, arguing on behalf of alien ideologies that they are mandated “me’ikar hadin,” whereas in truth it represents the total uprooting of Ma’amad Har Sinai. Our Sages taught (Yevamos 79a) that the innate hallmarks of the Jewish nation are being shamefaced, merciful, and performers of lovingkindness (bayshanin, rachmanin, gomlei chasadim), corresponding to the Avos (shame corresponding to Yitzchak, mercy to Ya’akov, chessed to Avraham). At Har Sinai it was proclaimed: “So that His awe shall remain upon your faces, so that you do not sin”—which refers to the quality of bushah (Nedarim 20a). Yet in Ikvesa d’Meshicha, “Chutzpah will increase” (Sotah 49b), and the hallmark of internal shame is stripped from the masses.

A common difficulty is raised: How can two brothers born of the same father and mother diverge so completely, where one remains steadfast in faith while the other becomes a brazen kofer? Can one say of the heretic that his ancestors did not stand at Sinai, when his lineage is identical to his faithful brother?

The Vilna Gaon elucidates that Ma’amad Har Sinai functions through one's active, soul-level attachment to the pure consciousness of the Kahal. A person possesses the free will to extract himself mi-toch ha-Kahal through his deeds and adopted philosophies. The believer binds his soul to Sinai; the heretic, by embracing the alien da’as, tears himself from the taproot, severing his connection to the essence of the Kahal.

VII. “Tzaddik KaTamar Yifrach” — Sofei Teivos KoRaCh

Mizmor Shir L’Yom HaShabbos (Tehillim 92) unveils the inner dimensions of this cosmic confrontation:

“When the wicked sprout like grass and all evildoers blossom, it is to destroy them forever... My eye has looked upon my watchful foes; my ears have heard of the evildoers who rise up against me. The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree; he shall grow tall like a cedar in Lebanon.”

The holy Arizal reveals:

Tzaddik ka-tamar yifrach (צַדִּיק כַּתָּמָר יִפְרָח) — the final letters spell KoRaCh (קרח).

This psalm was composed by Moshe Rabbeinu. “My ears have heard of the evildoers who rise up against me” refers to those detractors who assaulted Moshe (Korach and his assembly); whoever attunes his ear to truth hears from their own mouths, against their will, the ultimate vindication!

As recounted in the famous incident of Rabbah bar bar Chana (Bava Basra 74a, Sanhedrin 110a):

“An Arab merchant said to me: ‘Come, and I will show you those swallowed of Korach’... and I heard them proclaiming: ‘Moshe and his Torah are truth, and they are liars!’”

Korach was preserved in the belly of the earth to trumpet eternally to the cosmos: “Moshe v’Toraso emes v’hein badaim!” From the very jaws of the earth that swallowed our adversaries rises the irrefutable, eternal truth.

The two distinct signs performed in the parshah correspond precisely to the verses of the psalm:

  1. “The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree” (final letters: Korach) — the swallowing of Korach and the eradication of his ideology.

  2. “Planted in the house of Hashem, in the courtyards of our God they shall flourish” — the miraculous blossoming of the staff of Aharon, which was set in the Sanctuary and miraculously yielded blossoms and ripe almonds.

These matters continue to be clarified and refined until the End of Days. Confronted by the tumult of the street and the tempest of doubts cast by purveyors of alien da’as, the maskilim must cling with resolute strength to the pristine, pure wellspring surging forth from Ma’amad Har Sinai. He who fastens himself to this truth without wavering will merit to be numbered among the remnants summoned by Hashem, realizing the promise:

“No weapon formed against you shall succeed, and every tongue that rises against you in judgment you shall prove guilty. This is the heritage of the servants of Hashem, and their vindication is from Me, says Hashem.”
