Jews being bi-simcha is the BEST! The more - the better.
The discomfort that I feeling when watching musical selichos:
1] Minhag Yisrael is to have very serious and somber slichos. Changing Darkei Avos is dangerous and a slippery slope.
2] There are Teshuvos from the Gedolei Haposkim [most prominently - the Chasam Sofer] that forbid musical instruments in shul. To go against that would require counter Teshuvos to defend the contemporary practice ['עת לעשות וכו].
3] There is a lot of emotions at these events. But the feeling of regret, contrition, remorse etc. just doesn't seem to be present. So why call it "סליחות"?? That would seem to be a misnomer. If someone hurt me and then came back with a guitar and started singing and dancing and I made out that there was an apology hidden in there - I am not sure that I would like that so much.
Alternative suggestion:
To have a pre selichos kumzitz-concert and then do the "serious-slichos".
