Take Rav Aharon Lichtenstein as a f'rinstence.
He never turned away ANYBODY asking for any cause, even if he personally didn't identify with the cause. He would also add advice to somehow help extricate the person from his difficulty if he could.
He would give crazily high sums. Someone who had already received a large sum asked him for a personal check. He understood that the first check he had received was from his "foundation" [something only super wealthy people have] and now wanted more from his personal funds.
Rav Aharon was a mechanech with a sizable family. He had no "foundation".
Just a heart FILLED with Ahavas Yisrael and an understanding that the greatest merit is to help others.
זכותו יגן עלינו.
