An email response I gave to a sweet yid who wanted my reaction to the latest tragedy in Har Nof.
In tehillim [101] it says חסד ומשפט אשירה לך ד' אזמרה - Whether experiencing chesed or strict judgement I will sing to you Hashem [translation according to Chazal].
I understand why I would sing to Hashem when enjoying His gifts and loving kindness, but why would I sing to Hashem when I am suffering?

לחסד אשירה ולמשפט אשירה. גם אחרי כל הצרות האיומות יש לשיר שירה וזמרה

ויש לדעת כי המתיקות המורגשת בעת התפילה על הצרה היא כל כך נוראה וכל כך
נשגבה עד שכמו שאי אפשר להשיג תורה א"י ועולם הבא בלא יסורים [ברכות ה א]
כמו כן אי אפשר להשיג רוממות הנועם ההוא בלא יסורים. ולעתיד יתגלה כי ראוי
היה להשיג כל הנועם שבא דרך כמה הסתרים ולסבול עבורו כל היסורים הגלויות
והמרירות וזה גרם יציאת מצרים שהיא היציאה מבית עבדים
נשגבה עד שכמו שאי אפשר להשיג תורה א"י ועולם הבא בלא יסורים [ברכות ה א]

In a word, we will find out in the future that all of the yisurim were unbelievably geshmak and worth it in order to achieve the spiritual delights we attained in their wake. One cannot compare a prayer that comes from pain and suffering to a regular prayer.
The bottom line is one word: Emunah. If someone has emuna he will say dayan emes with SIMCHA [which is an absolute halachic obligation for everyone who suffers a tragedy!]. If someone lacks emunah he will suffer these "terrible" events and find no meaning in them.
I once heard a mashal: One day you are standing in shul and you feel a sharp pain in your shoulder. Ouch. Boom! Then you turn around and see that it is your best friend ever whom you haven't seen in 15 years and pined for so much, giving you a greeting and trying to get your attention. You and your friend embrace warmly and the pain turns sweet...
This, we believers believe, is all Hashem trying to get our attention. Anyone listening?
