And David went up from there, and he stayed in the strongholds of En-gedi.
And it was, when Shaul had returned from following the Philistines, that they told him, saying, "David is in the Desert of En-gedi."
And Saul took three thousand picked men from all Israel, and went to seek David and his men on the Rocks of the Wild Goats.
And he came to the sheepcotes on the way, and there was a cave, and Saul went in to cover his feet, while David and his men were staying at the end of the cave.
And David's men said to him, "Behold the day concerning which Hashem said to you, 'Behold, I shall deliver your enemy into your hand; and you shall do to him as it will seem good in your eyes.' " And David arose, and secretly severed the skirt of Shaul's coat.
And it was afterwards, that David's heart smote him, for he had severed Shaul's skirt.
And he said to his men, "Hashem forbid it for me, that I should do this thing to my lord, to the Hashem's anointed, to stretch forth my hand upon him, for he is the Hashem's anointed."
Why didn't Dovid answer his people right after they told him that Hashem delivered his enemy in his hand and that Dovid should "take care of him" as befitting an enemy. Why did he wait until he severed Shaul's cloak and only then answered "חלילה לי מה' אם אעשה" etc.?
Answered the Alshich Ha-kadosh, amazing: Dovid was in doubt. On one hand, "הבא להרגך השכם להרגו". Shaul was pursuing Dovid and he deserved to be removed from the scene. On the other hand - Shaul was משיח השם and G-d forbid that Dovid should harm him.
So Dovid performed a test. He will do a "מעין", a similar action to what his yetzer hara might be telling him [i.e. to harm Shaul] and see how he feels. If he feels POSITIVE and happy about it then he knows it is the right thing to do. If he feels guilt and discomfort then it is not the right thing to do.
So Dovid severed part of Shaul's cloak to see how this would affect him. What happened? "ויך לבו" - Heavy duty guilt. So he know that it was not the right thing to do to go further and harm Shaul. Only then he answered "חלילה" etc. G-d forbid that I should hurt him.
You can use this in life when in doubt - if you have a pure heart and healthy intuition. Sometimes, however, our feelings can trick us. Big topic. ואין כאן מקומו!
