Separating Light And Darkness - Part 2

Chazal tell us that the entire creation was for the Jewish people. The Brisker Rov adds [based on Avoda Zara 2b] that not only was the original creation for the Jews but also everything that happens afterward is directly or indirectly for the sake of Klal Yisrael and our study of Hashem's Torah.

With this idea we can explain the Gemara in Shabbos [33b]:

In this baraita Rabbi Yehuda is described as head of the speakers in every place. The Gemara asks: And why did they call him head of the speakers in every place? The Gemara relates that this resulted due to an incident that took place when Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Yosei and Rabbi Shimon were sitting, and Yehuda, son of converts, sat beside them. Rabbi Yehuda opened and said: How pleasant are the actions of this nation, the Romans, as they established marketplaces, established bridges, and established bathhouses. Rabbi Yosei was silent. Rabbi Shimon ben Yoḥai responded and said: Everything that they established, they established only for their own purposes. They established marketplaces, to place prostitutes in them; bathhouses, to pamper themselves; and bridges, to collect taxes from all who pass over them. Yehuda, son of converts, went and related their statements to his household, and those statements continued to spread until they were heard by the monarchy. They ruled and said: Yehuda, who elevated the Roman regime, shall be elevated and appointed as head of the Sages, the head of the speakers in every place. Yosei, who remained silent, shall be exiled from his home in Judea as punishment, and sent to the city of Tzippori in the Galilee. And Shimon, who denounced the government, shall be killed.

Rabbi Shimon bar Yoḥai and his son, Rabbi Elazar, went and hid in the study hall. Every day Rabbi Shimon’s wife would bring them bread and a jug of water and they would eat. When the decree intensified, Rabbi Shimon said to his son: Women are easily impressionable and, therefore, there is room for concern lest the authorities torture her and she reveal our whereabouts. They went and they hid in a cave. A miracle occurred and a carob tree was created for them as well as a spring of water. They would remove their clothes and sit covered in sand up to their necksThey would study Torah all day in that manner. At the time of prayer, they would dress, cover themselves, and pray, and they would again remove their clothes afterward so that they would not become tattered. They sat in the cave for twelve years. Elijah the Prophet came and stood at the entrance to the cave and said: Who will inform bar Yoḥai that the emperor died and his decree has been abrogated?

They emerged from the cave, and saw people who were plowing and sowing. Rabbi Shimon bar Yoḥai said: These people abandon eternal life of Torah study and engage in temporal life for their own sustenance. The Gemara relates that every place that Rabbi Shimon and his son Rabbi Elazar directed their eyes was immediately burned. A Divine Voice emerged and said to them: Did you emerge from the cave in order to destroy My world? Return to your cave. They again went and sat there for twelve months. They said: The judgment of the wicked in Gehennom lasts for twelve months. Surely their sin was atoned in that time. A Divine Voice emerged and said to them: Emerge from your cave. They emerged. Everywhere that Rabbi Elazar would strike, Rabbi Shimon would heal. Rabbi Shimon said to Rabbi Elazar: My son, you and I suffice for the entire world, as the two of us are engaged in the proper study of Torah.

As the sun was setting on Shabbat eve, they saw an elderly man who was holding two bundles of myrtle branches and running at twilight. They said to him: Why do you have these? He said to them: In honor of Shabbat. They said to him: And let one suffice. He answered them: One is corresponding to: “Remember the Shabbat day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8), and one is corresponding to: “Observe the Shabbat day, to keep it holy” (Deuteronomy 5:12). Rabbi Shimon said to his son: See how beloved the mitzvot are to Israel. Their minds were put at ease and they were no longer as upset that people were not engaged in Torah study.

This Gemara raises numerous questions:

1] Why are Gedolei Ha-dor having a discussion as to whether the deeds of the Romans are pleasant or not? Why is this important??

2] The Gemara relates that every place that Rabbi Shimon and his son Rabbi Elazar directed their eyes was immediately burned. But their complaint was against the PEOPLE who are abandoning eternal life for temporal life. So why is the outcome of their criticism that what they planted was burned?

3] How did R' Shimon heal what R' Elazar struck?

4] The implication of the Gemara is that R' Shimon would heal based on the argument that  "you and I suffice for the entire world", as the two of us are engaged in the proper study of Torah. How does that heal? The problem is that other people are involved in temporal matters so how does the fact that R' Shimon and his son suffice for the entire world fix that problem?

5] At the end of the story, their mind was put to rest and they found no need to burn anything because the Jews love mitzvos. Great. But how does that solve the original problem they pointed out that people are involved in this worldly matters and not eternal matters?

Stay tuned..... [I hope!!!]

Separating The Light And Darkness

And God saw the light that it was good, and God separated between the light and between the darkness.

Says Rashi:

And God saw the light that it was good, and God separated: Here too, we need the words of the Aggadah: He saw it that it was not proper for the wicked to use it; so He separated it for the righteous in the future. According to its simple meaning, explain it as follows: He saw it that it was good, and it was unseemly that it [light] and darkness should serve in confusion; so He established for this one its boundary by day, and for that one its boundary by night.

The commentators [רמב"ן גר"א ועוד] are astounded by both explanations. Is Hashem a person that he changes his mind? He "saw" that the reshaim shouldn't use the light so he reconsidered and separated it for the future?? He "saw" that light and darkness shouldn't serve in confusion so he changed his mind and separated them?? Hashem???? NAAAAHHHH!!!! Can't be?!

And what is the meaning of the psukim that we see almost every day "וירא אלקים כי טוב ויהי ערב יוהי בקר" - Does Hashem have to "see" and take stock of what He does [and then give Himself a "grade" - כי טוב]??

Super Human Powers

Not To Embarrass A Jewish Girl

Forgiveness

There are some people who have a lot to ask mechilah [forgiveness] for and yet - they never do. They go an entire lifetime not asking forgiveness from those they have hurt. Can it be???

Yom Kippur doesn't atone for sins between man and his fellow man. According to some, this means that if one doessn't ask his fellow man for forgiveness, Hashem doesn't atone not only for those sins but also for sins between man and G-d. Nothing. Zilcho. So how can anybody go through Yom Kippur without asking for forgiveness from those around him?? Husband from wife. Wife from husband. Parents from children. Children from parents. Siblings. Teachers from students. Students form teachers. Co-workers from each. Neighbors. The list goes on and on. People are sensitive and vulnerable. We must make amends when we hurt them.

There are others who refuse to forgive. Why? I don't know. I know one irascible Jew who seems to have a policy. No forgiving. He walks around holding grudges against people for life. So is his mental illness. The problem is that he is in a position of power which he uses to abuse people. People know about this and allow him to continue.

Other people say "You don't have to ask for forgiveness. You did nothing." How do you know? Do you know what I think about you [עי' זכריה ח-י"ז] and say about you behind your back?? Just be a mentsch and forgive. But no - they refuse.

The Rambam says that a person who refuses to forgive is cruel:

So let us ask for forgiveness and forgive easily.

Improving Economy

The economy in the US, by all accounts, is doing fantastic and getting better.

With his typical, characteristic humility [:-)], Donald Trump takes all the credit.

Barack Obama countered [in a recent talk at the U. of Illinois] that it ain't Donald - it was HIM, President Obama, who is responsible for the upsurge in the economy, the lowering of unemployment etc. etc. Trump just came around at the right time and is riding on Obama's coattails.

I can't help but disagree with both of them. It is G-D!! The Master of The Universe. The King Of Kings, who gets credit for our flourishing economy.

Who was the shaliach? Ahhhh - there are a lot of factors and it is hard to say that anyone gets all of the credit.

In the zchus of recognizing Hashem's dominion over the world, may the economy only get better so that people can serve Hashem and bring more goodness into the world.

Finding Meaninglessness In A Meaningless Book That Caused The Extinction of Innocent Trees

Am I intelligent?

I believe that I am. Don't get me wrong - I know plenty of people who are more intelligent than I but I also know plenty of people less intelligent. So I ask myself - There are two possibilities as to how I received my intelligence. 1] Completely by chance. Random. No intelligent being involved. My intelligence came from ZERO intelligence. Non-intelligence very intelligently created intelligence. 2] An Intelligent Being created my intelligence. This Being is SOOOOO Intelligent that his Intelligence encompasses that of all of mankind.

What is more plausible, 1] or 2]?

I think - if you will excuse the pun - that this is a no brainer. For this question one needs precious little intelligence. 2]. Intelligence creates intelligence. Consciousness creates consciousness. Life creates life.

Nothing creates nothing.

A lapsed Jew wrote a new book “Finding Purpose in a Godless World; Why We Care Even if the Universe Doesn’t”.  I didn't read it but from the review it seems that he asserts [with VERY VERY little intelligence] that the world has no purpose. It is all an accident. Science explains everything. But if you drop fifteen bucks then you will have the author attempt to convince you that your meaningless life has meaning. He should have named the book "Finding Contrived Meaning In Our Miserable World So We Don't All Kill Ourselves".

Science proves that there is no G-d, he claims.

Hmmmmm.

What is the proof? Not a thousand proofs, a hundred proofs or even ten. Give me one.

There are NONE. Not one. There are countless scientists who believe in G-d, many of them through science. So what does this psychiatrist know that they don't?

Showing how things work doesn't prove that there aren't hidden forces making it work. We know that a drop of sperm turns into a human being with all of his integrated complexity. We can explain how he develops in his mother's womb. But how does the womb know how to transform a tiny drop of sperm and an egg into a thinking, feeling, creative, conscious, [often] spirituality seeking, human being???

A complete freak of nature that happens billions and billions of times with amazing precision? Or a process guided by a higher intelligence? What makes more sense??
How did "nothing" suddenly become "something" that blew up and we have our universe?? Science has no explanation for that. There are LOOOOADS of phenomena that science can't explain and even when science CAN explain something all that does is INCREASE our awe and wonder at the miracle of creation.

This Jew should be zocheh to find G-d in a universe FILLED with his glory and we should all merit
