I often think that the term "false advertising" is almost an oxymoron [similar to what a counselor of mine in camp, would call the campers - without the "oxy":-). Juuuuuust joking]. An advertisement is really just a way of getting your money. Some people WANT your money! But you are not going to give it away for nothing so they offer you a product and use highly developed psychological mechanisms in order to get you to purchase the item and thereby part with your money on their behalf.
For example - They feature a beautiful woman who has nothing to do with the product together with the product in order that people associate the product with the woman. When the person buys the product he only gets the product while the woman remains ever elusive [ultimately - for our good!]. But he buys it anyway b/c of the ad. If it wouldn't work - they wouldn't do it!! It works. Effective advertising methods are intensely researched and billions are invested in them.
Or they say "The BEST ice cream in the world". That is a highly subjective claim! Many could argue with that. But they say it and who wouldn't want to lick the tastiest ice cream on the planet??!!
"This mattress will give you a GREAT night's sleep". Maybe. But no mattress will solve a person's stress and anxiety....
I saw an ad for a sefer: "This sefer will make you a lamdan." FALSE! To be a lamdan you have to go through Shas a few times and learn thoroughly. Reading a sefer with some interesting chakiros is not enough...
The old line of the Baalei Mussar is that everyone wants to learn Shas. But they want to do it in one night. And get a good night's sleep that night as well....
