Another reason not to hit your kids: If it's done out of anger [and it almost always is] then it is an איסור דאורייתא that we derive from the pasuk of לא יוסיף. So if instead of hitting one's child he eats pork it will be a lesser sin. [The sefarim say that a bein adam lachaveiro aveira is worse than a bein adam lamakom. The former is a sin against man and G-d whereas the latter is only a sin again G-d].
