Sometimes one looks at the list of the על חטא's that we say on Yom Kippur and says about certain sins "I didn't do that". This is only partially true.
Some sins we did but in a more subtle way. Example: על חטא שחטאנו לפניך בוועידת זנות - The sin of gathering together for matters of זנות. We don't do THAT ח"ו. Well, sitting and watching a movie together with others where there is inappropriate language and steamy עריות scenes are shown is a וועידת זנות. Another example is having discussions of private matters in a public forum.
In addition - if OTHER Jews commit these sins then it is as if we have also committed them. If there are Jews who go to clubs - we are also going to clubs. If there are Jews who steal - we also steal. כל ישראל ערבים זה בזה.
Some people [like myself] sometimes feel smug when hearing about the sins of others. "I am better than that. I would NEVER do that". How very superior I am!!! But the reality is that every sin also effects my soul. So down from the pedestal and towards reality.
