The whole תוכחה, all of the punishments in this weeks parsha are "תחת אשר לא עבדת את ה' א-להיך בשמחה ובטוב לבב" - Because ["תחת"] we didn't serve Hashem bi-simcha. Why is that so terrible?
Chasidim say "תחת" - Under. What was BENEATH the fact that you didn't serve Hashem bi-simcha? What was the deeper psychological reason? We didn't believe in the importance of being Jewish and keeping mitzvos. We did it - but by rote and habit. Other things not related to Avodas Hashem made us really happy - not what mattered...
