I am a big believer in not just taking but in giving back as well. When a person benefits from a country, enjoys freedom, democracy and prosperity, it behooves him to give back as much as he can. That is why I think that after high school, yeshiva boys should perform at least two years of national service. They should volunteer in hospitals, hatzala, help clean the streets, fill pot holes, work in shelters for the homeless etc. etc. If they don't serve in the army [which they really should] it is the least that they can do.
I am considering drafting a letter to the principals of all of the New York/ New Jersey area high schools with my proposal. Ramaz, Frisch, MTA, DRS, SAR and numerous others. The students must be taught that instead of selfishly pursuing a career and private wealth they should first serve their country and then with a more generous and benevolent spirit they will then enter university and the work force.
Share the burden! Why should the goyim do all of our dirty work? Why should they risk their lives in the armed forces while we sit in our comfortable homes in suburbia??
