We all have souls whose nature it is to want to GROW. When we are not growing, and even more when we are spiraling downward, our souls feel pain and anguish.
Isn't it INTERESTING how much human beings want to grow. For many, this means improving their outside shot or stock portfolio or relationships but the common denominator is the desire to improve. At the root, this reflects a desire to grow spiritually which is covered up with layers of physicality. It is like a woman who is feeling alone and unloved so she ... eats chocolate. Deep down, what she really needs is NOT chocolate but love. What our souls need more than money or fame or anything else is a connection to the אין סוף. When a person is far - he feels it deeeeeep in his or her subconscious - and often in their conscious as well. Our raison d'etre, our very reason for being, is to grow.
What to do??
That is where teshuva comes in. Teshuva is the opportunity to restore our souls to their lost nature - the quality of constantly moving forward and getting closer and closer to the Source.
הַחֲרָטָה הַטִּבְעִית, הַבּוֹעֶרֶת בַּלֵּב מִתְּכוּנָתָהּ [מטבעה, כתוצאה מתהליך התשובה] שֶׁל הַתְּשׁוּבָה, בָּאָה מִתּוֹךְ צַעַר הַנְּשָׁמָה שֶׁהִיא מִצְטַעֶרֶת מֵעֲמִידָתָהּ עַל מַצָּב אֶחָד בְּמַעֲלָתָהּ, תַּחַת שֶׁהָיְתָה צְרִיכָה בְּכָל עֵת לַעֲלוֹת מַעֲלָה אַחַר מַעֲלָה. וְקַל וָחֹמֶר אִם הִיא מַרְגֶּשֶׁת בְּעַצְמָהּ יְרִידָה. אֶלָּא שֶׁאִם בֶּאֱמֶת יָרְדָה לְגַמְרֵי מִמַּעֲלָתָהּ כְּבָר אוֹבֶדֶת הִיא גַּם כֵּן אֶת חוּשׁ הַצַּעַר הָרוּחָנִי, אוֹ עַל כָּל פָּנִים הִיא מַפְגִּימָתוֹ [מחסירה אותו], וְעַל–יְדֵי זֶה, חִדּוּדוֹ הַמַּר מִתְמַעֵט. אֲבָל הַצַּעַר שֶׁל עֲמִידָה עַל מָקוֹם אֶחָד הוּא נוֹקֵב וְיוֹרֵד עַד לְמַעֲמַקֵּי הַנְּשָׁמָה, וְהַרְגָּשַׁת הַכְּאֵב גְּדוֹלָה הִיא מְאֹד, מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהַנְּשָׁמָה שֶׁלֹּא נִפְגְּמָה בִּירִידָה חוּשֶׁיהָ הָרוּחָנִים הֵם בָּהּ חַיִּים וְעֵרִים, וְתַבְעֵרַת הַצַּעַר שֶׁל הָעֲמִידָה עַל מָקוֹם אֶחָד, שֶׁהוּא הֵפֶךְ טִבְעָהּ וְכָל מַטְּרַת הֲוָיָתָהּ, הִיא יוֹקֶדֶת בָּהּ כִּיקוֹד אֵשׁ, שֶׁיֵּהָפֵךְ לְשַׁלְהֶבֶת אַהֲבָה רַבָּה מְלֵאֲתִי עֹנֶג עֶלְיוֹן, בְּהִתְגַּבְּרָהּ לָשׁוּב אֶל מְכוֹן עֲלִיָּתָהּ וּלְהַחֲזִיק יָפֶה בִּתְכוּנַת הִתְעַלּוּתָהּ בְּכָל עֵת, "לְמַעַן יְזַמֶּרְךָ כָבוֹד וְלֹא יִדֹּם ד' אֱלֹהַי, לְעוֹלָם אוֹדֶךָּ".
