The Dissonance of The Believer

Regarding this post: In general whenever I copy what someone else wrote it goes without saying that I don't necessarily agree or disagree. This article was no exception. Here is a comment:

I would like to offer not merely an insight into spirituality but into psychology. We are all - like it or not - psychological beings driven by incredibly complex psychological mechanisms that we would be highly advised to understand to the best of our ability. There are general psychological truisms that apply across the board to all normal human beings and then there are those that are unique to us based on our inherent nature, upbringing, influences, experiences etc. etc. One who gives this no thought is living in darkness that can almost be likened [in the emotional sense] to חושך מצרים. REALLY dark...

We ALL - BO [Barely Orthodox], MO [Modern Orthodox], CO [Charedi Orthodox], live with a certain amount of dissonance [Goyim do too but they are not my focus here]. On one hand we profess belief in G-d, Torah and the eternal significance of each and every one of our thoughts, words and actions. Yet we will all admit that not everything we do reflects this belief. The examples are faaaar to many to enumerate here and I also don't want to offend anymore [they say that the world is about to enter into a Great Depression ח"ו and I don't want to make people any more depressed than they already are] but here are two.

Let me give a mashal often used by the Tolna Rebbe Shlita: We all say the pasuk in Tehillim: "טוב לי תורת פיך מאלפי זהב וכסף" - Torah is worth more than a million bucks!! Let us say that we would be in the Beis Medrash learning and we are told that someone is outside giving out a million bucks. How fast would we be outside collecting? Faster than you can say "gelt". Yes - but we are in the middle of learning Torah worth MORE than a million dollars? Dissonance. We profess to believe it but למעשה....

Another example is Lashon Hara. Everyone agrees it is terrible and morally wrong but the "frum" Lashon Hara sites are FLOODED with traffic. From whom? Goyim from Texas? No. People who daven 3 times a day.

Tonight is the yahrtziet of Rav Dovid'l of Tolna. He said that the world is split up into 50 percent apikorsim and 50 percent believers. Not, he explained, two different groups of people but rather WITHING EVERY PERSON lurks an apikores.

The reason for this is simple. G-d is hiding. The world is called עולם which means hidden [העלם]. We only will find Hashem if we search for him. The words of the Chazon Ish:

מידת האמונה היא נטיה דקה מעדינות הנפש. אם האדם הוא בעל נפש, ושעתו שעת השקט, חפשי מרעבון תאוני, ועינו מרהיבה ממחזה שמים לרום והארץ לעומק, הוא נרגש ונדהם, כי העולם נדמה לפניו כחידה סתומה, כמוסה ונפלאה, והחידה הזאת מלפפת את לבבו ומוחו… ודעת פתרונה כלתה נפשו.

Note: We need QUIET to find Hashem. This world is AWFULLY noisy. We need to be חפשי מרעבון תאוני - free of illicit desires. Who can say THAT about themselves. Most of us are filled with תאות אכילה, תאות נשים and numerous other תאוות  - every man and his תאוות that constantly flood his consciousness. Those make finding Hashem VERY hard.

Much more to say. ועוד חזון למועד בעז"ה בל"נ!!
