There is a very important distinction between our belief in the Jews being the Chosen People and our special love for our own and "racism" "chauvinism" [definition - excessive or prejudiced support for one's own cause, group, or sex] and "bigotry".
We believe that the Jews are special b/c HASHEM told us so. We are chosen b/c HASHEM chose us. We worry first and foremost about Jews b/c we are obligated to do so by the Halacha. We are Biblically obligated to love other Jews and are not similarly obligated to love non-Jews. It is not [or should not be even though it often is] b/c of human nature to prefer themselves, their "teammates" and people similar to themselves. We love Israel b/c it is the Land that HASHEM chose. Otherwise - Monsey and Passaic are better than Tel Aviv or Rishon Li-tzion.
Golda Meir was once asked if she believes in G-d. She responded "I believe in the Jewish people and the Jewish people believe in G-d." Why, Golda-le, did you believe in the Jewish people? Why did you love the Land of Israel so much?
If we are dan li-kaf zchus then we can say that deep in her Neshama she believed in Hashem and in the spiritual uniqueness of His people and Land. But on a conscious level - was just it empty nationalism and chauvinism?? What is THAT worth???
It is not only a question on Golda but on many of her ilk.
