In Hebrew an אלם is a mute person. A violent person is called אלים.
Are all mute people violent??????
When a person is unable for whatever reason to express his feelings with words they often come out in violent ways.
אלם-אלים.
What is interesting is that the word for "powers" is אלים which is why Hashem is called א-ל. But false gods are also called אלים as in מי כמוכה באלים השם. So it makes sense that אל and אלים mean basically the same thing - power and strength. [עי' נצח ישראל פ"ה]
