A Lesson From The Ben Sorer Umoreh

Rabbi Yosei HaGlili says: Is it simply due to the fact that the boy ate a tarteimar of meat and drank a half-log of Italian wine that the Torah states that he shall be taken out to court to be stoned? Rather, the Torah penetrated the ultimate mind-set of the stubborn and rebellious son and the inevitable results of his actions, and it is understood that he will continue on this path, and in the end he will squander his father’s property, and then, seeking the pleasures to which he had become accustomed but not finding them, he will go out to the crossroads and rob people.

When someone dies young רח"ל, we view it as a great tragedy and many tears are shed. It IS a great tragedy and there is nothing more painful for a parent.

But when someone is alive but isn't frum, there are no tears and no sense of tragedy is felt.

But wait - the Gemara says that the בן סורר ומורה is executed b/c we prefer that he die now before he turns into a criminal then afterwards. Meaning - it is better to be dead than to be a sinner. 😲😲😲

That is TOTALLY contradictory to the way people think. He is religious, not religious, somewhere in the middle - hey, free country.

FREE COUNTRY???????? He is rebelling against Hashem and it would be much better if he weren't here. The only value his life has is that as long as he lives he can do teshuva. But there is no value in a life devoid of spiritual content.

This doesn't mean that it is not a tragedy when a young person passes away. It is and cry we should. But if the person kept mitzvos then they fulfilled their purpose and are going to a great place. People say that they "lost" a relative. The person is not "lost". Maybe we are a bit lost. The person is basking in Hashem's Light. Not lost at all. But when a person doesn't keep Shabbos, or watches pritzus on the Internet or steals in business etc. etc. it is a MUCH MUCH greater tragedy. For that we should REALLY cry.

THAT is השקפת התורה and הדברים חודרים עד עמקי בטן!!!

And is it simply due to the fact that the boy ate a tarteimar of meat and drank a half-log of Italian wine that his father and his mother shall take him out to stone him? Rather, there has never been a stubborn and rebellious son and there will never be one in the future. And why, then, was the passage relating to a stubborn and rebellious son written in the Torah? So that you may expound upon new understandings of the Torah and receive reward for your learning.

So hopefully we were zocheh to be דורש and receive the שכר for learning this parsha.
