Restore Your Natural Purity

Image result for

Rav Yitzchak Yaakov Reines was a great Gaon who unfortunately has been all but forgotten except by a few historians of Modern Zionism. But he was in fact a unique Talmid Chchom and original thinker.

Here is one idea of his:

Some people are naturally clean and fastidious about cleanliness. Whenever they are dirty they feel very uncomfortable until they cleanse themselves. Others aren't bothered by filth. This is not because the natural state of their soul is not to be bothered by filth but because they have been desensitized to their natural need for cleanliness. They can cure this malaise by being vary careful about their hygiene and they thereby restore their natural state of appreciation of cleanliness.

The same applies in the spiritual world. A person should naturally feel good about mitzvos and badly about aveiros. If he doesn't it is because he has corrupted his natural spiritual state of spiritual purity to the point where he feels comfortable with filth. The way to fix this is to be very careful about keeping mitzvos and avoiding aveiros and he thus restores his natural sense of propriety.

That is what Dovid Hamelech meant when he said ארחץ בנקיון כפי - I will wash and cleanse my hands and thereby ואסובבה את מזבחך השם - I will surround the mizbeach of Hashem and reach his Holy Throne.

Here is the passage from the sefer in full!:-)
