Those who wanted to give and are looking for a good cause - I just received this email:
Dear Friends and Families,
I hope this letter finds you and your families well. The purpose of this campaign is to give you a current update on my dear husband Manny, his valiant struggle with ALS and our financial situation. I have included recent photographs for you to see Manny as he was a short time ago and as he is currently. Although Manny has a wonderful disposition, the ability to smile and communicate with his eyes, and BH is mentally and intellectually sharp, sadly, he is totally dependent.
Due to the total loss of his independent vital functions of mobility, communication, breathing, eating and other body activities, he is now in a category of “pikuach nefesh” that requires 24/7, uninterrupted, professional care. Initially, I personally covered the night shift and found myself on the verge of collapse. He now requires one experienced caregiver for the day and one on duty through the night, as well as a third supplementary worker for Shabbat. Each worker’s shift requires expensive overtime payments and benefits, and therefore the cost for such full-time coverage is $70,000 per year. There are many other expenses, including medical costs and private necessary therapies of about $35,000 to manage his care.
While depleting our personal finances, and even securing the maximum amount of government help, we still find ourselves facing a mountain of unbearable financial obligations. Thus, we are compelled to turn to you at this critical moment in time to help us raise this year's funds.
After a lifetime of counseling others in their times of need, I am now faced with this personal crisis of having to balance caring for my beloved husband with limited resources. Your support and participation is a huge source of chizuk and inspiration for us to continue in managing the difficulties. We greatly appreciate your help and wish you and your families a happy and healthy New Year.
