Gladdening The Hearts Of Widows

An example of a Jew with an Ayin Tovah [see previous post].

Reb Aryeh Levin.

One story among myriads.

After the Chief Rabbi of Israel, the Tzaddik and Gaon Rav Herzog passed away, Reb Aryeh would visit his widow every Monday to see how she is and to lift her spirits.

One Erev Rosh Hashana, Reb Aryeh was very ill [he died soon after] and called to apologize that he couldn't make it.

I must note that Rav Herzog's home was a hub of activity when he was still alive. Many great talmidei chachomim would come to learn and many other dignitaries as well. I am certain that after his passing the house became quiet and empty and the Rebbetzin felt very alone. There is a special mitzva to encourage widows but here the mitzva was even greater.

We should also appreciate that Reb Aryeh was a VERY charedi man. [His daughter married Rav Elyashiv shlita.] He probably wasn't so comfortable chatting with women. We are Westerners so it isn't a big deal for us. For him it was.

He really had an ayin tova.
