The problem is that some people don't even live until retirement. Those who make it don't usually stay in that state for too long. A year, maybe five ten or twenty, but not much more.
What about your soul? Your soul is eternal. The more good we do in this world the more we invest in our soul. Every act of kindness or spirituality creates an eternal bond with the Infinite Light of Hashem and ensures perpetual closeness. A wise investment. We are here to create that bond.
We remind ourselves of this every morning - אתה עתיד ליטלה ממני ולהחזירה בי לעתיד לבא - you are going to take this neshama away from me [a worthwhile reminder as well...] and restore it to me in the future. What type of neshama are we going to get? The neshama that we created here. The more we polish it the more pure it is.
Forever.
But if chas vi'shalom we neglect it and it becomes tarnished, we will exist in an eternal state of "tarnishment". Not a good idea!
May we be wise enough to return our neshama in a pure state and receive it back in our blessed blissful future.
:-)
