Yirah And Naaseh Vinishma - Part 2

What we wrote, is a preface to what the Gra wrote in Aderes Eliyahu [Vizos Habracha]:

Hashem came from Sinai  - they merited because of their own merit because they said נעשה ונשמע.

Shined from Seir - As it says in the Gemara that when Hashem wanted to give the Torah to the Jewish people he offered it to each nation. He came to Yishmael and he said "what does the Torah say?" He said "Don't commit adultery". He said "We can't. Give it to the Jewish people" the same question was asked by Eisav who couldn't accept "לא תרצח" etc. etc. They [Eisav and Yishmael] all gave them [i.e. to the Jews] gifts and they [Eisav and Yishmael] gave them  "doing and listening" as it says "נעשה ונשמע".

Apparently the Gra learned from the pasuk "וזרח משעיר למו הופיע מהר פארן" that the fact that Hashem went to the nations and offered the Torah and they didn't accept it is part and parcel of Kabbalas Ha-Torah of the Jewish people and is not only relevant to the nations. Therefore, the Gra explained that Eisav and Yishmael are נעשה ונשמע [this is expressed in their names. נעשה - עשיו. Also ישמעאל - שמיעה]. from whom the Jews received נעשה ונשמע. This requires explanation. Also the Gra seems to contradict himself: First he explains ה' מסיני בא - They merited because of their own merit because they said נעשה ונשמע. And then he goes on to say that they were given נעשה ונשמע by עשו and ישמעאל. Which one is it? Their own merit or gifts from עשו and ישמעאל.

In the system of evil in the world there are two archetypes of powers of evil, called by the Gra: יצר התאווני [raw desire] and יצר הכעסני [anger]. The יצר התאווני [Yishmael] is the power of desire through which a person goes out of his own circumscribed territory, he strives to unite with everyone and he "loves" everybody to the point that he wants to break down all the fences. This is expressed in adultery. The יצר הכעסני [Eisav] brings a person to the opposite extreme - to contract within his own boundaries. He sees everyone who stands outside of him as a threat to his very existence and therefore he strives to destroy it. Corresponding to this, the Torah says לא תרצח and לא תנאף - Don't kill and don't commit adultery.

These are the archetypes of evil in the world and everything else are just subcategories of those two evils, as the Gra writes writes at the beginning of Shir Hashirim that the "Chiefs" of the Gentiles are Eisav And Yishmael and everyone else is their "offspring". In the Kol Eliyahu, it says in the name of the Gra that the 70 bulls brought on Succos correspond to the nations of the world which are split up into two groups of 35 corresponding to Yishmael and 35 corresponding to Eisav. If you think about it you will observe that there are two basic personality types in the world. There are people who are בעלי תאוה. They might seem gentle, pleasant and charismatic but they are filled with a desire to sleep around which they often actualize. Others are filled with anger. BE CAREFUL not to step on their toes. In some people the dominant trait is "שמיעה", in everything they look for the משמעות - the deeper meaning, the sublime, the beautiful, the harmonious. These people are usually detached from the realities of this world, the practical parts of life are less dictating, they feel that it is a descent from the depth and beauty of creation. The עיקר for them is not in the limited framework of this world but beyond its narrow confines. These people are constantly extending themselves beyond the narrow boundaries of their body and senses. Their bodies and practical side want to break through their narrow limits and extend to what is beyond. Others live in the world of עשיה - practical, this worldly needs. Such people are limited to the narrow framework of this world and find no rest until they find something to involve themselves in that relate to practical actions in this world. Whatever is in their area of interest but doesn't relate to practical action bothers them.

Anyone who relates to שמיעה alone is an adulterer and someone who relates to עשיה alone is a murderer [even if society stops them from carrying out their inclinations, they are adulterers and murderers]. That is the nature of נעשה when not tempered by נשמע and נשמע when not tempered by נעשה.

That is the general idea of what the Gra said: נעשה ונשמע is the proper form of קבלת התורה. The gifts that Eisav and Yishmael are the נעשה ונשמע that they personify. The tikkun which was effected by the Jewish people was by preceding the נעשה to the נשמע which fixed both the נעשה and the נשמע independently. So we have A] The נשמע we received from Yishmael. B] The נעשה received from Eisav. C] The tikkun done by preceding נעשה to נשמע at מתן תורה.
