Why is it that one who embarrasses his friend loses his portion in the world to come? It is an accessory of murder [אביזרייהו דשפיכות דמים] and the gemara doesn't say that for murder one loses his portion in the world to come?!
The whole world was created for כבוד שמים. As it says כֹּל הַנִּקְרָא בִשְׁמִי וְלִכְבוֹדִי בְּרָאתִיו יְצַרְתִּיו אַף עֲשִׂיתִיו. When one embarrasses his friend and strips him of his כבוד he goes against the entire purpose of creation. Creation is for כבוד שמים which includes כבוד for צלם א-להים.
That is why when a person is חייב מיתה and we hang him on the tree, we have to take him down לֹא תָלִין נִבְלָתוֹ עַל הָעֵץ כִּי קָבוֹר תִּקְבְּרֶנּוּ בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא כִּי קִלְלַת אֱלֹהִים תָּלוּי וְלֹא תְטַמֵּא אֶת אַדְמָתְךָ אֲשֶׁר יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לְךָ נַחֲלָה. It is a lack of כבוד to keep him hanging - to him and to Hashem in whose image he is created.
That is why the gemara [:ברכות י"ט] has to find a source that כבוד הבריות is not דוחה כל התורה. If we wouldn't have a source then we would assume that כבוד is so important that it is דוחה all the mitzvos.
That is the deeper meaning of וַיְבָרֶךְ אֹתָם אֱלֹהִים וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם אֱלֹהִים פְּרוּ וּרְבוּ וּמִלְאוּ אֶת הָאָרֶץ וְכִבְשֻׁהָ וּרְדוּ בִּדְגַת הַיָּם וּבְעוֹף הַשָּׁמַיִם וּבְכָל חַיָּה הָרֹמֶשֶׂת עַל הָאָרֶץ - we fill the earth and rule over the animal kingdom in order to use our דעת to connect everything to כבוד שמים.
Mussar Haskel: The whole creation is for כבוד. Not for use to pursue but to give it to others and to Hashem.
