A great tumult has seized the city of New York. The streets are filled with shouting, the air is thick with emotion, and all bedlam has broken loose. And why? Because of a man named Jalen Brunson.
The world tells us he is a "hero." They tell us he has achieved the pinnacle of human success, in securing a contract worth over 100 million dollars in 2022. And what was the world-changing feat that earned him this astronomical sum? What monumental service did he render to humanity?
He put a leather sphere inside a piece of knitted rope numerous times and led the Knicks to a championship.
The Flawed Logic of the Leather Sphere
Now, if we are to look at this strictly from a perspective of chochmah and sechel hayashar, the entire enterprise is riddled with flaws. Was it even a complete success? I ask you: did the ball stay in the net?
No! It fell out right away! Every single time!
Yet, the masses rejoice. Apparently, in the upside-down alma di-shikra world of olam hazeh, it does not matter that the ball immediately returned to its original state of being on the floor. What matters—they insist with great passion—is that it passed through the mesh in the first place.
And for this fleeting, temporary passage of a ball through a hole, people paid hundreds of thousands of dollars (that is actually what some tickets were going for!!). They wept, they embraced, they experienced deep, existential validation. "We" won!!
The Lone Ranger and Tonto [an Indian] find themselves surrounded by hostile Indians. The Ranger asks Tonto: “What are we going to do, Tonto?” To which Tonto replies: “What do you mean "we", white man?"
Did "we" win?? Did "we" even play??
Battle of the NY and San Antonio Bnei Cham
Let us analyze the structure of this ritual. It is a clash between two groups of bnei cham (many with peyos coming out of all parts of their skulls and long pony tails adding both chasidish and feminine aspects to this really gentile and masculine event). One group is paid handsomely by very wealthy owners in New York. The other group is paid handsomely by wealthy owners in San Antonio.
The historic, earth-shattering conclusion that has New York in a state of absolute hysteria? The New York group managed to drop the ball into the net more times than the San Antonio group.
Wow. Historic. Miraculous.
Let us ask the obvious question: Did the Ribono shel Olam create the cosmos, suspend the stars in the heavens, and form man from the dust of the earth so that a leather ball could fall into and out of a net? Does the Almighty care about this frivolity?
We have a clear raaya (proof) that He does not: In all twenty-four books of the Tanach, through all the thousands of pages of the Gemara, never once does He mention that this matters to Him. Not a single pasuk. Not even a remez.
What Does Matter?
If we want to talk about true heroism, let us look at what actually moves the upper worlds. What is truly worthy of our emotion and resources?
Overcoming Urges: Conquering the yetzer hara when it entices a person to speak lashon hara or lose their temper.
Perfecting Character: Working tirelessly on middos like humility, patience, and kindness.
True Chessed: Constantly thinking about and doing for others, and giving a LOT of money to tzedakah.
Davening with Kavannah: Pouring one's heart out in prayer with great feeling and focus.
Amala shel Torah: Learning Torah in-depth and with unwavering diligence.
THOSE are the things that matter. These are the achievements that sustain the universe!
The Ultimate Contract
Will a person get paid 104 million dollars if he does these things for four years? Of course not. You will not see a kollel man signing a multi-million dollar sneaker deal for mastering Bava Kamma [chances are that he is quite poor].
But that is exactly the point.
We do not engage in the service of Hashem for the money. We do not do it for the fame, the endorsements, or the adulation of sports commentators. We do it because it is our raison d'être—our entire purpose for being placed on this earth.
As New York remains gripped by madness over what is, at the end of the day, a children's game played by grown men, let us take a step back and appreciate our portion.
Baruch Hashem, we have grown up.

סערה גדולה אחזה בעיר ניו יורק. הרחובות מלאים בצעקות, האוויר סמיך מרגשות, ומהומה רבתי פרצה בכל עבר. וכל כך למה? בגלל אדם אחד בשם ג'יילן ברונסון.
העולם אומר לנו שהוא "גיבור". מספרים לנו שהוא הגיע לפסגת ההצלחה האנושית, כאשר בשנת 2022 השיג חוזה בשווי של למעלה מ-100 מיליון דולר. ומהו אותו הישג משנה-עולם שזיכה אותו בסכום אסטרונומי זה? איזה שירות כביר ונשגב הוא העניק לאנושות? הוא הכניס כדור עור לתוך חתיכת חבל סרוג.
הלוגיקה הפגומה של כדור העור
והנה, אם נתבונן בדבר זה אך ורק מעין החכמה והשכל הישר, הרי שכל המפעל הזה רצוף פגמים. האם זו בכלל הייתה הצלחה מושלמת? אני שואל אתכם: האם הכדור נשאר בתוך הרשת? לא! הוא נפל החוצה מיד! בכל פעם ופעם! ואף על פי כן, ההמונים צהלו ושמחו. ככל הנראה, בעולם ההפוך – "עלמא דשיקרא" של עולם הזה – אין זה משנה שהכדור חזר מיד למצבו הראשוני על הרצפה. מה שחשוב – כך הם מתעקשים בלהט רב – זה עצם העובדה שהוא עבר דרך הרשת בתחילה. ועבור מעבר חולף וזמני זה של כדור דרך חור, אנשים שילמו מאות אלפי דולרים (וזהו אכן המחיר שהגיעו אליו חלק מהכרטיסים!!). הם בכו, הם התחבקו, הם חוו אישור קיומי עמוק. "אנחנו" ניצחנו!!
מסופר על הפרש הבודד (The Lone Ranger) וידידו האינדיאני טונטו, שמצאו את עצמם מוקפים באינדיאנים עוינים. שאל הפרש את טונטו [אינדיאני בעצמו]: "מה אנחנו הולכים לעשות, טונטו?" ועל כך השיב לו טונטו: "למה אתה מתכוון ב'אנחנו', איש לבן?

בואו וננתח את מבנה הריטואל הזה. מדובר בהתגוששות בין שתי קבוצות של בני חם (שרבים מהם מעוטרים בפאות המבצבצות מכל חלקי גולגולתם ובקוקו ארוך, המוסיפים הן היבט חסידי והן היבט נשי לאירוע הגויי והגברי לחלוטין הזה). קבוצה אחת מקבלת שכר שמן מבעלים עשירים מאוד בניו יורק. הקבוצה השנייה מקבלת שכר שמן מבעלים עשירים בסן אנטוניו.
ומהי המסקנה ההיסטורית, מרעידת העולמות, שהביאה את ניו יורק למצב של היסטריה מוחלטת? שהקבוצה הניו-יורקית הצליחה להפיל את הכדור לתוך הרשת יותר פעמים מהקבוצה של סן אנטוניו.וואו. היסטורי. פלא פלאים.הבה נשאל את השאלה המתבקשת: האם לשם כך ברא ריבונו של עולם את הקוסמוס, תלה את הכוכבים בשמים ויצר את האדם מעפר הארץ – כדי שכדור עור ייפול לתוך רשת ויצא ממנה? האם לקדוש ברוך הוא אכפת מהבלי ההבלים הללו?
יש לנו ראיה ברורה לכך שלא: בכל עשרים וארבעה ספרי התנ"ך, ולאורך כל אלפי הדפים של הגמרא, אף לא פעם אחת הוא מזכיר שדבר זה משנה לו. אין אפילו פסוק אחד. אף לא רמז.
מה כן משנה?אם ברצוננו לדבר על גבורה אמיתית, הבה נביט במה שבאמת מניע את העולמות העליונים. מה באמת ראוי לרגשות ולמשאבים שלנו?
כיבוש היצר: לנצח את היצר הרע כשהוא מפתה את האדם לדבר לשון הרע או לכעוס.
תיקון המידות: עבודה בלתי פוסקת על מידות כמו ענווה, סבלנות ועין טובה.
חסד אמיתי: מחשבה מתמדת ועשייה למען הזולת, ונתינת צדקה ביד רחבה ובממון רב.
תפילה בכוונה: שפיכת הלב בתפילה ברגש עמוק ובריכוז מוחלט.עמלה של תורה: לימוד תורה בעיון ובשקידה שאינה פוסקת.אלו הם הדברים שקובעים. אלו הם ההישגים שמקיימים את העולם!החוזה האולטימטיביהאם אדם יקבל שכר של 104 מיליון דולר אם יעשה את הדברים האלה במשך ארבע שנים? ודאי שלא. לא תראו בן כולל חותם על חוזה נעליים של מיליוני דולרים מפני שהפך לבקיא במסכת בבא קמא [קרוב לוודאי שהוא עני ואביון].
אבל זוהי בדיוק הנקודה. אין אנו עוסקים בעבודת השם בשביל הכסף. איננו עושים זאת בשביל הפרסום, החסויות או התשבוחות של פרשני הספורט. אנו עושים זאת מכיוון שזהו רצון בוראנו – כל תכלית קיומנו והסיבה שלשמה הושמנו על פני האדמה. בשעה שניו יורק נותרת אחוזת טירוף בגלל מה שאינו, בסופו של יום, אלא משחק ילדים המשוחק על ידי אנשים מבוגרים, הבה נפסע צעד אחד לאחור ונוקיר את חלקנו.
ברוך השם, אנחנו כבר גדלנו.
