To be Moshiach one has to restore the Davidic Kingdom, build the Beis Hamikdash, gather in the exiles, full Torah law is restored, Korbanos are brought and we keep Shmittah and Yovel.
He also has to be a King who learns Torah and keeps mitzvos like his father Dovid Hamelech, compels all the Jews to follow the Torah, wages wars and fixes the world to serve Hashem. If he dies [the exact word is נהרג but the point is that he is not alive like בר כוכבא], then he is NOT Moshiach.
As in the video uploaded to a previous post, the very person thousands if not tens of thousands of people believe is Moshiach, admitted that he received no communication from Above that he is Moshiach and in order to be Moshiach that is necessary. He also fulfills none or almost none of the requirements necessary to be Moshiach. Except that he died which excludes him [which is probably why so many believe that he is still alive].
Yet - the belief is unchanged. There is an important psychological mechanism that applies to all areas of life. People, as a species, are very VERY reluctant to change beliefs, whatever those beliefs might be. It also doesn't matter how much evidence to the contrary is presented.
Christians believe that Yoshke is Moshiach. What makes him Moshiach? Nothing. Are there any allusions to him in Tanach? No. Except for the fact that he suffered and one perek in Navi COULD be understood that Moshiach will suffer. But according to that metric, my grandmother could also be Moshiach. He didn't bring to the revelation of the glory of Hashem on earth and has been dead for about 2000 years, so too late. But nothing will change that beliefs of billions. No number of psukim or other proofs.
As far as I am concerned, I don't care who Moshiach is - LET him [or her!! Sorry - Moshiach will be male] come!!
המלך המשיח עתיד לעמוד ולהחזיר מלכות דוד ליושנה לממשלה הראשונה, ובונה המקדש ומקבץ נדחי ישראל. וחוזרין כל המשפטים בימיו כשהיו מקודם. מקריבין קרבנות, ועושין שמטין ויובלות ככל מצותה האמורה בתורה.
ואל יעלה על דעתך שהמלך המשיח צריך לעשות אותות ומופתים ומחדש דברים בעולם או מחיה מתים וכיוצא בדברים אלו אין הדבר כך, שהרי רבי עקיבא חכם גדול מחכמי משנה היה, והוא היה נושא כליו של בן כוזיבא המלך, והוא היה אומר עליו שהוא המלך המשיח, ודימה הוא וכל חכמי דורו שהוא המלך המשיח עד שנהרג בעונות. כיון שנהרג נודע להם שאינו, ולא שאלו ממנו חכמים לא אות ולא מופת. ועיקר הדברים ככה הן: שהתורה הזאת חוקיה ומשפטיה לעולם ולעולמי עולמים, ואין מוסיפין עליהן ולא גורעין מהן.
ואם יעמוד מלך מבית דוד הוגה בתורה ועוסק במצות כדוד אביו, כפי תורה שבכתב ושבעל פה, ויכוף כל ישראל לילך בה ולחזק בדקה וילחם מלחמות ה', הרי זה בחזקת שהוא משיח. אם עשה והצליח ובנה מקדש במקומו וקבץ נדחי ישראל, הרי זה משיח בודאי, ויתקן את העולם כולו לעבוד את ה' ביחד, שנאמר: כי אז אהפוך אל עמים שפה ברורה לקרוא כולם בשם ה' ולעבדו שכם אחד.
ואם לא הצליח עד כה, או נהרג, בידוע שאינו זה שהבטיחה עליו תורה, והרי הוא ככל מלכי בית דוד השלמים הכשרים שמתו. ולא העמידו הקדוש ברוך הוא אלא לנסות בו רבים, שנאמר ומן המשכילים יכשלו לצרוף בהן, ולברר וללבן עד עת קץ, כי עוד למועד.
