Kiddush For The Nurses

In 1962 [a GREAT YEAR for Met fans. We were born - Li'Torah Chuppah and Maasim Tovim!] Rabbi Bunim Sofer was offered a job. He was to go to the hospital and say kiddush for the nurses and a short dvar Torah on the parsha. There were three halachic issues with which he had to contend.

1] Is it permitted to be paid for services rendered on Shabbos?

2] He was expected to use the modern Hebrew pronunciation of words [הברה ספרדית] while his custom was to use the ashkenazi pronunciation. Can he change?

3] The nurses would sing shalom aleichem and aishes chayil in his presence. This is affectionately known as kol isha which is ERVAH and forbidden for male ears. Uh oh!

Rav Valdenberg [Tzitz Eliezer 7/28] used his breathtaking breadth to answer.

1] Permitted for a dvar mitzva. Also, he had to prepare the dvar Torah before Shabbos so he can consider the payment for the preparation.

2] Ideally one should use the same pronunciation as his father but once in a blue moon as an exception it is permitted to change. [At my aufruf in a shul where they used הברה ספרדית they asked me to be chazan and for the first and probably last time in my life [it was also my first and last aufruff - I hope!] I davened with הברה ספרדית. I felt a little uncomfortable but this responsum justifies my actions. I think my logic at the time was that a person should follow the minhag hamakom.]

3] This is a touchy one [like negiya shylos:-)]. The Rav answered: Foiggedabout. NO WAY. If you have to hear them sing it's absolutely forbidden.

If I had been asked this question I would not have been as quick to say no to number 3. ME? A zealot for tzniyus?? Indeed. Since this is a case of extenuating circumstances where he is going to give these woman some ruchniyus, there may be room to be lenient based on a gemara in Psachim 25b. See the sefer Aderes Tiferes 4/3 for various sources.

Rav Valdenberg himself has a responsum where he permits teaching woman Torah even though they are not dressed appropriately based on the Chazon Ish and others.

Of course this is just "talking in learning" but for halacha li'maase ask your local posek. Show him the post before he decides...
