In my opinion, the question is completely twisted and the answer is twisted. The only explanation I have is that people are so sucked up into pop-culture they don't even realize that it perverts their entire perspective of what is normative halacha and erodes the basic foundation of kedusha. This is not a new chumra. This is basic, minimal, Jewish religious behavior that this article is undermining.
If someone wants to act a certain way - it's a free country. But don't write a halacha article with a lot of sources justifying it.
