It Should Be Our Worst Aveirah - Dear

One fellow in my neighborhood put up a letter on the bulletin board outside the shul with his personal stationary instructing everyone to SIT when the piyut of אלי ציון is said on Tisha B'av, quoting a number of sefarim to that effect.

I don't enjoy arguing with people because I never win. If I win - I lost, because the other guy feels bad. If I lose - then I also lost. So who wants to go into a lose-lose situation....

So I won't say anything to him. But to you - I can.

In fact there are many kehillos who have a minhag to stand and there are sefarim that instruct one to stand. Others say that one should sit [עי' בס' נטעי גבריאל] . [Sitting makes more sense  - why should this piyut be different than all others. But there must be a reason so many people have a minhag to stand]. I am not impressed when someone quotes sefarim to prove his point when there are sefarim that say just the opposite.

There are SOOOO MANNNNYYY things to fix. Like, standing during אלי ציון should be our WORST "SIN"!!! I say "נהרא נהרא ופשטיה". Everyone should follow their custom [and make sure not to do differently than everyone else in shul].

--------------

On that note I saw someone lament in a frum magazine that people start emails with "Hi" and not "Dear". The custom is "Dear" and we should keep to the custom, he asserted [and gets paid for writing].

When the "custom" to write "dear" started it was for handwritten letters which were more formal than the average email. I have sent probably tens of thousands of emails and almost never write "dear". My wife is "dear". My parents are "dear". Deer are "deer".  Everyone else is "Shalooommm swweeeetest friend" and numerous emojies.

Starting an email with "Hi" should be our greatest sin.

Getting high should however not be legalized.
