Halachos For Chodesh Av

Rav Zave Rudman

Erev Shabbos Rosh Chodesh Av

1)      You can shower as usual. (It is correct to do it a drop differently than usual.)

2)      For those who cut nails on Rosh Chodesh, you can cut them.

3)      The meat food for Shabbos can be tasted by someone to see if it is tasty. (There is no טועמיה on the meat food for everyone else.)

4)      Shoes can be polished.

5)      Regular Shabbos clothes can be worn.

6)      Havdalah, a child should drink the wine. (If there is no child an adult can drink it)

Since תשעה באב is Shabbos but delayed till Sunday, the exact status of this week is questionable, especially for Sefardim.

At some point during the week, make sure you have shoes that are definitely non-leather.

Erev Shabbos תשעה באב

1)      One should minimize the shower on Erev Shabbos, and only use hot water for your hands, feet, and face. One should take the rest of the shower like during the week of the Nine Days.

2)      Nails can be cut.

3)      The meat food for Shabbos can be tasted by someone to see if it is tasty. (There is no טועמיה on the meat food for everyone else.)

4)      Shoes can be polished.

5)      The Minhag is to wear regular Shabbos clothes.

Shabbos תשעה באב

1)      The davening is regular with regular tunes and singing.

2)      Mincha there is no צדקתך.

3)      One can learn all parts of the Torah till Chatzos. After that, only תשעה באב things can be learned.

4)      The meals are normal.

5)      Shalosh Seudos is permitted as much as you want, you can even eat meat. The egg and bread dipped in ashes that are customarily eaten on an Erev Tisha Bav that is not Shabbos, is not done this year.

6)      Shalosh Seudos must end by Shkia.

Care in Not Preparing from Shabbos for  תשעה באב

1)      During Shabbos, you can eat and drink as much as you want even to prepare for the fast. It is better to not say that you are doing it to prepare for the fast

2)      You cannot wash, anoint, etc. after Shkiah

3)      If you take any medication or food supplement before a fast to make it easier to fast, mix it with food and then eat the food

4)      One cannot take off their shoes when it is still Shabbos. Therefore, you should wait till after Shabbos is over, then say ברוך המבדיל, then remove your shoes

5)      You cannot show any signs of Aveilus till Shabbos is over. Therefore, you do not sit on the ground, or take off Shabbos clothes

6)      You cannot bring your Kinos or Tisha Bav shoes to shul on Shabbos. If you need to bring your Kinos, you can read something in it on Shabbos.

7)      The best way to do this (if the schedule of your Shul allows it), is to wait at home till after Shabbos, say ברוך המבדיל, take off your Shabbos clothes and shoes, put on clothes and shoes for Tisha Bav, and then go to shul.

8)      Unless there is a specific reason, you should not clean the house from Shabbos till after Chatzos the next day. You may make the house look normal but not more than that.

The Night of תשעה באב when it is מוצאי שבת

1)      There is אתה חוננתנו in Maariv. If you forgot, you do not repeat Shemoneh Esreh

b.      You should say ברוך המבדיל when Shabbos is over before you do anything non-Shabbos

c.       In shul, someone is מוציא everyone in בורא מאורי האש

d.      For women who do not go to shul, best someone should say בורא מאורי האש  for them, so the father of the household should make the Bracha for everyone at home before he leaves. If not, according to many they can say it for themselves.

Sunday Motzaei תשעה באב after Shabbos

1)      Havdala is only הגפן  and Havdala. Anyone can drink the wine, you do not need a child.

2)      A woman whose husband is delayed can make Havdalah for herself

3)      Since תשעה באב  is delayed and Sunday is already the 10th of Av, immediately after the fast and Havdalah Sunday night laundry, showers, haircut, etc. is permitted. But meat and wine are only permitted the next day in the morning.

3.       Brushing without water or using mouthwash, is permitted only in a place of great distress, and one must be very careful to not swallow anything

10)   What to do on Tisha Bav

a.       One should not think of things other than the Churban all day.

b.      This is hard for us, but we should at least not involve ourselves in frivolous activities.

c.       One who needs to work because of their job or a loss is permitted.

11)   Davening

a.       Most Poskim say that you say שעשה לי כל צרכי even though this is a Bracha thanking HaShem for shoes, and we are not wearing leather shoes.

                                                               i.      If you forgot הבדלה in  אתה חונןyou do not repeat.
