In Israel, a siren is sounded on Yom HaZikaron and Yom HaShoah and people are supposed to stand silently and remember the fallen soldiers, people killed in acts of terror and the Holocaust, respectively. There is much discussion about whether we [Torah observant Jews] should do likewise as the "moment of silence" is not a Torah concept. We remember Niftarim with Torah, Tfillah, Chessed etc. but not by standing silently. "Chukos Aku"m" some claim!
I say [not li-halacha and not li-myse!!!] that when millions of people spend one minute not speaking Lashon Hara, Nivul Peh, Leitzanus or even Dvarim B'teilim [which is an איסור עשה as per Yoma 19] then it should be a GREAT zchus for the niftarim!!!
If this would last a whole day - על אחת כמה וכמה!!!!
