Deepfake

While scrolling through Facebook one day, a viewer came across a video that left him completely stunned. The footage showed an ICE patrol car pulling up in front of a home in what appeared to be an upscale neighborhood. Two agents stepped out and approached a black woman standing in a driveway with two children. They were all well-dressed.

The ICE officer aggressively demanded to know who the woman was and what she was doing in that neighborhood. She firmly told the officers they were out of line, but the lead agent challenged her again. She finally informed them that she was a federal judge and that they had no authority to harass her. In response, the officer in charge loudly proclaimed, “I am the authority here,” and shoved her to the ground.

The video ended there.

The footage was deeply shaking. While immigration policy is a known and hotly debated issue, such a blatant abuse of power against a federal judge felt like an absolute breaking point. A mixture of despair and rage over the state of the country took hold.

Wanting to learn more, a search began for the names of the officer and the judge mentioned in the video. It quickly became clear that something was strange: the only results appearing were other Facebook and TikTok videos. As the search went deeper, something even more shocking than the video itself was uncovered. It was a fake—a sophisticated AI deepfake. The scenario, the dialogue, and the violence were all completely manufactured.

The realization brought a sense of dread. Even for someone who considered themselves a critical thinker, the evidence had looked damning and entirely convincing. It was appalling that someone had gone to the trouble of creating such a realistic video and spreading it across social media specifically to incite rage against the system.

As a Jew, thoughts immediately turned to the vitriol directed at Israel. It became clear why so many people, particularly the younger generation, seem to harbor such intense hatred toward that community. They are being fed misinformation—not just simple lies, but sophisticated, malicious propaganda that looks and feels like the truth.

This appears to be the defining challenge of the modern age. It is no longer just about people having different opinions or debating facts; it is about bad actors using technology to create a twisted reality designed to divide and stoke hatred. There are no easy answers on how to fight it, but until a solution is found, society remains in deep trouble.
