Usually when we verbalize our thoughts it is on order to convey information. Hashem doesn't need to know what we are thinking or feeling so the act of talking to Him is to impress upon ourselves various ideas, thoughts, emotions and attitudes.
When we say אלקי, נשמה שנתת בי טהורה היא - Hashem, the soul you placed in me is pure, we are supposed to feel and identify with our souls. The body is just a physical vessel but the pure holy soul within me that is a part of Hashem should be my guiding light and my driving force. Everything I do during the day, every decision I make, must be rooted in the knowledge that I am a holy G-dly soul.
So I turn on the television and watch nonsense or worse. How is my holy pure soul going to take that? With great suffering. I don't necessarily feel it because my body is enjoying but that doesn't negate the fact.
I have a conversation. Does it befit a holy pure soul to talk about this topic??
I go to a certain place. Is this a place for a neshama tehorah??
If one internalizes this idea his whole day is elevated and illuminated.
