Recently, thousands of Lubavitch Shluchim gathered for their annual convention. We can all learn from Lubavitch - their unbelievable Mesirus Nefesh to bring the light of Torah to the world. Literally the whole world. Vietnam, Japan, Siberia - it doesn't matter. It is beyond belief. We should have a thousandth of their willingness to sacrifice and burning passion for Torah and Yiddishkeit.
On the other hand - the keynote speaker spoke quite openly about the Rebbe being Moshiach. It seems that mainstream Lubavitch believes that the Rebbe is Moshiach. Many believe that he is still alive - that also seems to be mainstream. This is false [at least most of us don't believe these things] and dangerous. False Messiahs have never been good for Am Yisrael.
The other thing that bothers me is how often the Rebbe is mentioned in proportion to Hashem. It seems that the ratio is 50 to 1. There is also great emphasis on "giving the Rebbe nachas ruach" and the like. To me, that smacks of Avoda Zara or something precariously close. The Christians always talk about Yoshke even though they profess to believe in the "Father". Same idea. Taking a person and making one's whole religion revolve around him.
Lubavitch does much more than most of us in bringing people to Shmiras Hamitzvos but the fact that their teachings are predicated on a false belief in a human being is very unsettling to say the least. This takes nothing away from the greatness and holiness of the Rebbe ZTZ"L. There is no doubt in my mind that he had Ruach Hakodesh and was a massive Talmid Chochom.
But Hashem he is not, Moshiach he is not [at least not in the meantime certainly] and alive he is not.
