A friend sent me a video of a Hachansas Sefer Torah in honor of Rabbi ----. The video started very nicely but then things got a bit sketchy - the ladies got the Torah and were dancing with great enthusiasm [forgive me - I normally don't watch women dance - it just came up on the screen. Fortunately, they were dressed properly].
I am partly responsible because a close relative of mine gives this rabbi endless money. Oddly, this relative doesn't ask me where he should donate his millions. So I can't say I have full responsibility.
Anyway - I am trying to keep an open mind. I don't like the attitude that if I am not used to an idea or practice it must be bad. If the Gedolim had that attitude - Beis Yaakov never would have started. And Beis Yaakov saved the Jewish people. The girls were assimilating at alarming rates and without religious girls there are no religious children 专讞"诇. So - open mind.
On one hand - the ladies expressing their passionate love for Torah. We want women to love Torah!!!馃槉馃槉
On the other hand - it smacks of feminism and the desire to change traditional practice. And the slope gets slippery.... From "Orthodox" to "Open Orthodox" to "Conservative-Reform" the road is short.
Charedi Rabbonim don't address this issue because in Charedi communities it is a non-issue. Women by and large have no interest in dancing with the Sefer Torah. They express their love of Torah by sending their husbands off to kollel [or daf yomi shiur or Semichas Chaver or etc. etc.] and children off to yeshiva with a smile and much love and warmth while working hard to fund the enterprise. Kudos to such women. The world rests on their holy shoulders!!!
But Dati-Leumi or Modern Orthodox rabbis are often confronted with this question. The more modern the community - the more likely the tradition is going to be bent in the direction of modernity and contemporary winds of change. In our world - there is almost complete equality between men and women. There is almost no profession closed to either gender - and if various politicians have their way - no public bathroom will be closed to either gender as well. [A notable exception are professional sports where - to my great dismay - women have not been accepted. "Tight end for the Jets - Jenny Wilson!!!"]. So "men dance with the Sefer Torah - let women dance too" - they cry!!
Here is the response of R' Aviner, affiliated with the more "Chardal" [讞专讚"诇] faction [what mustard has to do with religiosity, I don't know. But that is what they are called. I call myself 拽讟砖讜"驻. All we need now are some burgers and we're good to go!!馃槈馃榾]:

I don't think that Rabbi Riskin is lying. Rav Soloveitchik wanted to give him chizzuk as he was starting a new community and trying to be mekarev them [which he did with almost unprecedented success]. But in principle - he was opposed. That is consistent with his strong Brisker inclinations to preserve Minhag Yisrael at all costs.
Rabbi Eliyahu Shlesinger, the Rav of Gilo writes about this in Shoalim Vi-dorshin [4-54] and his unequivocal answer is - no. In part because women at the time of their cycle should not be handling a Sefer Torah - see there. [cf. - Tzitz Eliezer 10-8 (The abbreviation cf. (short for the Latin: confer/conferatur, both meaning "compare") is used in writing to refer the reader to other material to make a comparison with the topic being discussed)].
