The problem I am dealing with now [we all have problems:)] from Parshas Va-eschanan:
אין אחת מערי מקלט קולטת עד שיובדלו כולן. שנאמר שש ערי מקלט תהיינה לכם. והודיענו משה רבינו שאין שלש שבעבר הירדן קולטות עד שיובדלו שלש שבארץ כנען. ולמה הבדילן? אמר הואיל ובאה מצוה לידי אקיימנה
רמב"ם הל' רוצח ח-ג
One of the six cities of refuge does not protect one until all of them are separated as it says "six cities you should have". And Moshe Rabbeinu told us that the three cities on the other side of the Jordan [it was usually John Paxson on the other side of Jordan] do not protect you until the three in Israel are separated. And why did he separate them? He said, since a mitzva has come into my hand I will fulfill it. [Rambam Hil Rotzeach 8/3]
The second sentence " שאין שלש שבעבר הירדן קולטות עד שיובדלו שלש שבארץ כנען " is merely a repetition of the first sentence " אין אחת מערי מקלט קולטת עד שיובדלו כולן" so what is the Rambam adding?
One fine Jew from Bnei Brak wrote an article in which he wants to change the text in the Rambam to solve the problem but the Frankel Rambam has numerous manuscripts [including one that the Kesef Mishna felt was super-accurate] and they all say what our version of the Rambam says.
So what is the Rambam adding in the second sentence?
There are other issues with this Rambam as well which I will leave for the scholars who read this blog to discover.
