The idea discussed of losing our רשות היחיד has great contemporary significance. When someone is in רשות הרבים he is not himself but who he wants himself to be perceived as. Today's world has turned into one big רשות הרבים. People are so convinced by their public persona that they actually forget who they really are. It is like an actor who adopts the nature and personality of a certain character to the extent that he forgets who he is in real life.
The word "persona" is derived from Latin, where it originally referred to a theatrical mask. The Latin word probably derived from the Etruscan word "phersu", with the same meaning, and that from the Greek πρόσωπον (prosōpon).
