"איש לפי מהללו" ו"איש לפי מחללו"

משלי כ״ז:כ״א

(כא) מַצְרֵ֣ף לַ֭כֶּסֶף וְכ֣וּר לַזָּהָ֑ב וְ֝אִ֗ישׁ לְפִ֣י מַהֲלָלֽוֹ׃

(21) For silver—the crucible, for gold—the furnace, And a man is tested by his praise.

רבנו יונה - משלי פרק כז פסוק כא

פירושו, מעלות האדם לפי מה שיהלל, אם הוא משבח המעשים הטובים והחכמים והצדיקים, תדע ובחנת כי איש טוב הוא ושרש הצדק נמצא בו, כי לא ימצא את לבו לשבח את הטוב והטובים תמיד בכל דבריו, ולגנות העבירות ולהבזות בעליהן מבלי מאוס ברע ובחור בטוב.

דלכאורה, פירוש הכתוב הוא דהאיש ניכר מתוך אופן החילול שבני אדם מהללים אותו. ולזה בא רבינו יונה להוציא מפירוש זה ומבאר ד"איש לפי מהללו", היינו מתוך מה שהאדם מהלל ... כלומר, אם אנו באים להעמיד למבחן, את אפיו של האדם, עיקר השאלה היא: תנועת ההתבטלות שלו, להיכן הוא נוטה? - דתנועת התבטלות של האדם, נובעת היא מכוח הכרת החשיבות ... אבל האמת היא כי במבחן זה, של "איש לפי מהללו" נכללת היא שאלה מוקדמת לשאלה הנ"ל. כי עלינו לדעת, שלכוח זה של הכרת החשיבות, נמצא בנפש התנגדות גדולה. יש בה בנפשו של אדם נטייה חריפה לזלזול. לעומת כוח הכרת החשיבות, נמצא הוא בנפש מהלך שאינו רוצה לסבול שום חשיבות, ובזילותא ניחא ליה. שמו של הכוח הזה, המתפרץ בחזקה, להפקיע את עצמו מידיה של החשיבות הוא: "ליצנות".

Who do we become? A lot has to do with the type of people we revere and for whom we have adulation. Our objects of veneration are both a reflection of who we are inside and impact who we will become in the future.

 Our culture has great respect for people who are the opposite of everything we are supposed to be. 

If someone is "out there" and is a "social media influencer" then chances are that he is a chitzonyus-dike person [like that guy "Ehrman" who is always giving mussar when he himself is barely frum and has a Phd in ignorance and stupidity]. Who wants THAT? I can't think of one [not that I know most of them] such person who we want to have any type of similarity. That includes any politician, pundit or journalist. [I heard one popular internet rabbi lauding a certain blogger and saying how he agrees with just about everything the guy says. I am like - If I had any respect left for you it is now all gone. If this blogger-Am-Haaretz is your guy then something is very wrong].  

The value of public personalities is to learn what to avoid. That is why the Torah is filled with narratives about villains, to know what NOT to be. 

This is not to say that these people are all bad. Almost nobody is all anything. We are all a mixed bag of good and evil, pure and impure, holy and defiled. But for inspiration and knowledge we should look to truly great people and make sure we know the true place of people who lack the qualities of an Oved Hashem.
