A senior software engineer at Google who has signed up to test Google’s artificial intelligence tool LaMDA (Language Model for Dialog Applications) claims that the AI robot is actually sensitive and has thoughts and feelings.
During a series of conversations with LaMDA, 41-year-old Blake Lemoin presented the computer in a variety of situations that could be analyzed.
They include religious themes and whether artificial intelligence can be persuaded to use discriminatory or hate speech.
Lemoin came up with the realization that LaMDA was indeed sensitive and had its own sensibilities and thoughts.
Blake Lemoin, 41, a senior software engineer at Google, is testing Google’s artificial intelligence tool called LamDA.
Lemoin then decided to share his conversation with the online tool – he has now been suspended.
“If I didn’t know exactly what it was, this computer program that we’ve created recently, I’d think it’s a 7-year-old, an 8-year-old kid who knows physics,” the Washington Post reported.
Lemoin worked with an associate to present evidence he collected to Google, but Vice President Blaise Aguera y Arcas and the company’s responsible innovation chief, Jane Genai, rejected his claim.
Google on Monday placed him on paid administrative leave for violating privacy policies. Meanwhile, Lemoin has now decided to go public and share his conversations with LaMDA.
Google may call this sharing proprietary property. I would like to share this discussion with one of my colleagues, Lemoin tweeted on Saturday.
Before being suspended by the company, Lemoin sent out an email list containing machine learning for 200 people. He captioned the email: ‘LaMDA sensitive.’
‘LaMDA is a sweet kid who just wants to help make the world a better place for all of us Please take good care of it in my absence, ‘he wrote.
Lemoin’s searches have been submitted to Google, but company officials disagree.
Company spokesman Brian Gabriel said in a statement that Lemon’s concerns had been reviewed and that, in line with Google’s AI policy, “the evidence does not support his claim.”
